Gwyneth Paltrow is a successful actress who has been thriving in Hollywood since the 90s. The actress had made headlines for her acting work and her personal life, and she has even had success on the radio, as well. After many years in the business and an Oscar win to her name, the actress has seen and done just about everything a performer could hope for.

Earlier in her career, Paltrow was taking on a variety of projects, including one that wound up being problematic at the time of its release. The movie still lives on in infamy, and the problems surrounding the movie led to Paltrow calling it a “disaster” nearly 20 years after its release.

Let’s take a closer look at Paltrow and the movie that has been criticized for years on end.

Coming from an acting family, Gwyneth Paltrow has been involved in the entertainment industry since she was a teenager. Paltrow wasn’t an immediate star, but as the years rolled on and she continued to turn in exceptional performances, she wound up developing into a household name who went on to make millions of dollars along the way.

Back in the 90s, Paltrow spent the majority of her career working in film. Hook was an early success for the actress, as she played a young Wendy Darling in the movie. As the decade moved along, Paltrow was landing consistent work, and 1995’s Seven proved to be another hit for the young actress. Things really started heating up after that point.

After the success of Emma and Great Expectations, Paltrow became an A-list star after taking the lead in Shakespeare in Love. The film was a monster hit at the box office, and for her performance in the movie, Paltrow took home the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Paltrow would continue to star in hits like The Talented Mr. Ridley before securing a role as Pepper Potts in the MCU. This ultimately led her to being featured in Avengers: Endgame, which is one of the biggest films of all time. Prior to this, Paltrow took the lead in a movie that has had its share of controversy.

In 2001, just a few years after winning her Oscar, Gwyneth Paltrow starred alongside Jack Black in the romantic comedy, Shallow Hall. The film had some notable moments and even went on to be a hit at the box office, which marked a success for both Paltrow and Black, who was coming into his own as an actor. Its overall message, however, was a source of contention for film fans and critics alike.

During production, Paltrow needed to wear a suit in order to achieve the size of the character, and this was something that changed the way she saw things.

According to Paltrow, “The first day I tried [the fat suit] on, I was in the Tribeca Grand [hotel in New York City] and I walked through the lobby. It was so sad; it was so disturbing. No one would make eye contact with me because I was obese.”

“I was wearing this black shirt with big snowmen on it. For some reason, the fat clothes they make…,” Paltrow paused and corrected herself. “The clothes they make for women that are overweight are horrible. I felt humiliated because people were really dismissive,” she continued.

Yeah, everything about this movie was causing controversy, and it’s almost impossible to imagine something like this being made now. As the years went on, the movie continued to be a pariah, and Paltrow has some serious regrets about it.

She Regrets The Movie

During a BFF quiz for Netflix, Paltrow and her assistant, Kevin Keating, were quizzed about one another, and the subject of Paltrow’s least favorite performance came up.

“I would say it would be Shallow Hallow. I’m not sure who told you to do that one, but it wasn’t me,” said Keating.

“I wasn’t there working for you. Not around for that.”

“That was before your time. See what happened? Disaster,” she replied.

All these years later, and the actress still has regret about taking part in Shallow Hal. Calling the film divisive is quite an understatement, and time has done it no favors in the eyes of film fans. The movie sent out a pretty harmful message in an era that wasn’t as high on body positivity as things are now.
