In the movie world, it's all too common for ambitious financiers to invest vast amounts of money in projects that flop supremely. On occasion, some flops end up becoming cult classics years later and those involved recoup their losses through DVD sales and TV broadcasts. But with many of these cult classics, only a minimal amount of money was lost. With the movies in this list, however, hundreds of millions went to waste.

For those involved in the making of these box office bombs, it must be disheartening and pretty embarrassing to see those big bucks vanish into thin air. These are the 10 most expensive box office flops of all time, ranked in order of how much money was lost.

10 'Tomorrowland'

Through its takeover of 20th Century Fox and the enormous popularity of Disney+, the Walt Disney Corporation is raking in billions of dollars. But it is not immune to box office flops.

2015 science fiction movie Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, failed spectacularly. With a total production and marketing budget of $280 million, the movie grossed between $90-150 million, making it one of the most expensive box office flops of all time.

9 'Pan'

This poorly received 2015 adaptation of J.M. Barrie's beloved children's story was not only a box office bomb, but a critical failure. Critics took aim at its tasteless casting decisions, with Rooney Mara playing Native American character Tiger Lily, which was deemed symptomatic of Hollywood's ongoing whitewashing problem.

The movie made a loss of around $85-150 million against a budget of $150 million.

8 'Mars Needs Mom'

With an uninspired title like Mars Needs Moms, we're not too surprised that this 2011 sci-fi flick was a failure. But the sheer volume of loss is staggering.

Despite a hefty $150 million budget, the movie only grossed $39 million. Adjusted for inflation, the total loss is a shocking $114-164 million. Moreover, it was poorly received by critics, with the Guardian writing, "Children are unlikely to enjoy it, and parents will be aching for a few stiff drinks in a Mars bar long before it's over."

7 'Battleship'

Science fiction movies performing terribly seems to be a common theme among these expensive flops. Based on the board game of the same name, 2012 movie Battleship stars A-listers such as Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna and Liam Neeson.

Unfortunately, the movie made a loss of $167 million. This was the second massive box office bomb for star Taylor Kitsch, but we will address his first flop later on in this list...

6 'Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas'

With a cast featuring Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Michelle Pfeiffer, one would be forgiven for thinking that this DreamWorks animation was a success. But while critics did indeed praise the voice acting, they were less than kind towards the movie itself.

On a $60 million budget, the movie's total loss was $174 million (adjusted for inflation) and nearly bankrupted the studio as a result.

5 'Cutthroat Island'

We don't hear much from Geena Davis these days, but back in 1995 she was a huge Hollywood star. Sadly, Cutthroat Island is not part of her impressive resumé. Adjusted for inflation, the movie lost $176 million. This swashbuckling adventure is even in the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the most expensive box office bombs of all time.

4 'Mortal Engines'

Based on the novel of the same name, the screenplay for Mortal Engines was written by none other than Peter Jackson. But whereas his Lord of the Rings movies are among the most popular and highest grossing box office successes of all time, the same cannot be said for this steampunk movie.

Mortal Engines was an epic failure, losing $178 million against a budget of $110 million.

3 'The 13th Warrior'

Loosely based on Beowulf, 1999 action movie The 13th Warrior was woefully misjudged. In addition to the problematic casting of Antonio Banderas as an Arab character, the movie also ended up reaching production costs of $160 million, but only grossed a miniscule $61 million worldwide.

One of the biggest box office flops of all time, its present-day loss is a jaw-dropping $198.

2 'The Lone Ranger'

The Lone Ranger wouldn't be the last Johnny Depp movie to make a colossal loss, but it would certainly be the most expensive. The 2013 Western had a production budget of around $225-250 million, with an additional $150 million spent on marketing. All that investment sadly went to waste, as the movie made a shocking loss of $209 million.

1 'John Carter'

Back to that other Taylor Kitsch movie... John Carter is the most expensive box office flop of all time. In addition to a budget of $263 million, $100 million was spent on the marketing campaign. But the movie made a staggering loss of $223 million, which forced Disney to cancel its sequel and even led to the resignation of the company's chairman, Rich Ross.
