Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen! When it comes to theories about the ever-quotable and totally iconic Mean Girls queen bee character Regina George, there are lots of fans who try to get their hypotheses noticed. The high school diva is famously calculating, and manipulative, but there's still room for fans of the movie to try and find hidden depths in this - on the face of it - very superficial personality.

So what are fans saying about Queen of The Plastics, Regina George? Let's have a rundown of the biggest theories about her character...

8 Regina Is Queer

Yes, that's what some fans are really speculating, with the theory recently going viral on TikTok. Though Regina appears to have a penchant for good-looking male classmates such as Aaron Samuels and Shane Oman, theorists suggest that this is all an elaborate ruse in order to fool others into thinking she is totally straight.

Her aggressively girly aesthetic, habit of bullying others for their sexuality - thus distracting from her own, apparent lack of genuine interest in her boyfriends, and tendency to check out other girls - ostensibly for their fashion choices, have led some eagle-eyed fans to conclude that Regina is performing her role, and is secretly a closeted lesbian.

7 Regina Rejected Janis Over A Stupid Misunderstanding

Remember Regina explaining to Cady why she and Janis Ian stopped being friends? Regina said she had to cut Janis off because she thought she was a lesbian, and so didn't want her attending her all-girls pool party.

Well one clever fan has deduced that this may be all due to Regina misunderstanding the meaning of one little word. At the end of the movie, Janis describes herself as Lebanese. Meaning, as Sabrina states, "The whole premise of the movie was based on the fact that Regina didn't understand the difference between Lebanese and lesbian."

6 Cady Is Regina's Doppelganger

One elaborate fan theory suggests that the entire Mean Girls storyline is a sort of dark fairytale.

In the movie, Cady starts out as Regina’s complete opposite - they have pretty much nothing in common. This suggests that Cady is Regina's 'shadow self', a sort of evil counterpart to Regina's angelic image. Cady's very scary Halloween costume also lends to the theory - she's a dark image which haunts Regina, and orchestrates her ultimate downfall.

5 Regina George Is Literally A Dictator

Another fascinating theory surrounding this iconic teen character, is that her behaviour during the movie is a kind of blueprint for building a dictatorial regime. Regina's emphasis on her own legitimacy as queen bee, through her looks, lifestyle, and popularity, her ability to co-opt (bring rivals or threats such as Cady under her control), and agressive repression of those around her which stamps out individuality ("On Wednesdays we wear pink!"), all serve to control and manipulate those around her. Hell, her name means 'queen' in Latin, and she even managed to kick her parents out of their bedroom because she wanted it. That's power.

4 Regina Wouldn't Have Survived Being Hit By That Bus

Near the end of the movie, Regina is hit by a big yellow school bus as she berates Cady. Though she survives the collision, and is seen later wearing an elaborate back brace and embracing sport through her recovery, some fans think there's no way Regina would've survived being hit. One fan claims the bus looked to be travelling well over the 25mph speed limit around the school, and so Cady's statement that Regina only “fractured her spine” seems implausible. An expert weighed in on the discussion, and basically confirmed the grim prognosis if this had happened in real life: “The movie bus speed would likely have been fatal, and if not, would have caused massive injuries.” She wouldn't have made it to Spring Fling, either: “It would take months to heal and recover from the bus accident."

3 Regina Isn't The Villain Of 'Mean Girls'

Think Regina is the bad guy of the movie? Think again. Though its said that 'evil takes its human form in Regina George', she's not actually the real villain of Mean Girls. So, who is it? Cady? Gretchen? Glen Coco? No, its Janis. Regina's antics are small-fry compared to the schemes Janis cooks up, and actress Lizzie Caplan who played the character agrees: “She was a bit craftier than the other the other mean girls. She was like a mean girl with spy plans… with purpose.”

2 There's A Real Regina George

This one isn't so much a fan theory as an amusing coincidence. When April Turner posted her senior pictures to Twitter, little did she know that she'd become an internet celebrity overnight for her striking resemblance to Regina George. The tweet has over 36,000 likes and its easy to see why. Admirers immediately began replying to April, asking whether her 'hair is insured for $10,000.' One fan took it to the next level, however, and posted 'CONSPIRACY THEORY: Regina really was killed in the bus accident, but was then exchanged by this girl, April.' Plausible?

1 Regina Has A Personality Disorder

A professional article on personality disorders in popular TV characters claims to have diagnosed a real psychological condition in Regina George. The writer claims the teenager has something called 'Histrionic Personality Disorder' and cites various aspects of her behaviour as proof. According to the article, Regina is 'an attention junkie...This hunger for attention has created tension between Regina and her group of friends', and this is highly symptomatic of a psychological disorder. Her interactions with others 'are often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior', and she is also 'highly suggestible' and influenced by the opinions of others. While its almost impossible to accurately diagnose a fictional character, this author seems to be pretty close with his conclusion of Histrionic Personality Disorder with narcissistic traits.
