Before the now broken up Kimye became a thing, there was Irina Shayk and Cristiano Ronaldo. What an attractive power couple they were. They were even named the hottest football couple in 2014, putting David Beckham and Victoria Beckham in second place. The two dated from 2010 to 2015. Quite a long relationship, right? But these days, it's easy to forget that the Portuguese footballer and the Russian supermodel used to date.

CR7 already has four children, one of which with long-term girlfriend Georgina Rodríguez. Shayk is also a mother now. She has a daughter with ex Bradley Cooper and is currently rumored to be dating Kanye West. With all those things going on with their individual lives nowadays, it really feels like it was such a long time ago when Shayk and Ronaldo were the ultimate #RelationshipGoals.

There were a lot of speculations and drama attached to the abrupt split of the former most attractive couple in football. It was a seemingly bitter end, with Shayk crying in the airport before jetting off to the Maldives where she celebrated her birthday alone. Ronaldo was also vocal about how it was such a difficult time for him, causing him to struggle to keep up with the pressures of his career. So what really ended their relationship?

They Had Crazy Work Schedules

Irina Shayk and Cristiano Ronaldo met in 2010 during an Armani photoshoot. After being linked to many women, the Portuguese footballer finally buckled down and started dating the Russian supermodel. They tried to keep their relationship a secret, but of course, it was impossible given their very public professions. They were both at the peak of their careers when they officially confirmed their relationship with the public. Shayk was always traveling around the world for runway shows and photoshoots while Ronaldo was focused on his training.

The two hardly had any public appearances together. In a press conference, Shayk said this about her and Ronaldo's clashing schedules: "Life will tell us if we'll form a family. I'm very happy and I'm lucky to be with someone who makes me laugh. Like every woman, I want to have kids, start a family in a big house. I want all this but everything in its own time. Love doesn't make plans."

For five years, they managed to keep it going. Their Instagram accounts were filled with vacation photos together and whenever Shayk was in Madrid, she stayed in a hotel close to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium where Ronaldo played with Real Madrid. But after some time, the relationship didn't seem to be going anywhere. Partly because of their work conditions. Ronaldo prefers to be with his support system during his games but Shayk simply couldn't fit that in her busy schedule.

She Didn't Get Along With His Mother

CR7 is all about family. So the most popular rumor that swirled around the media after he and Shayk confirmed their split was about her allegedly disrespecting his mother. Sources said that one event drove Ronaldo to call it quits with the supermodel. It was on December 31st, 2014. It was Ronaldo's mother Dolores Aveiro's 60th birthday. He had arranged a party for the occasion but Shayk reportedly refused to come.

Sources said that it was a hard insult on Ronaldo's mother and that the soccer player couldn't forgive the Victoria's Secret Angel for it. Well, if Shayk really did that, it's pretty understandable. His 2015 life documentary Ronaldo showed just how close he is with his mother.

The supermodel denied those rumors, though. She said she worked very hard to be a part of the family. But some fans of the couple placed the blame on CR7's mother for encouraging him to break up with Shayk since she's never really had a good feeling about the Russian bombshell.

He Was Unfaithful To Her

Another version of the events leading to Ronaldo and Shayk's split was infidelity. In 2012, the footballer made headlines as he was accused of cheating on the supermodel. It wasn't the first time he was associated with such rumors but the press didn't have enough evidence. Still, Shayk subtly confirmed that those cheating stories might have actually been true during an interview she did a few months after the breakup.

"My ideal man is faithful, honest, a gentleman who knows how to respect women," Shayk told Hola a week after being spotted kissing Bradley Cooper. "I don’t believe in men that hold us down or make us feel unhappy, because that’s not a man, that’s a boy." Ooh, burn. She also added that she once thought Ronaldo was that man.

She reiterated, "What I’m looking for in a man is that he’s honest. I like someone who is loyal to women… That’s the most important thing a man needs to have." It seems like Shayk still hasn't found that ideal man. But with rumors of dating Kanye West these days, who knows...
