2013 was a tough year for fans of the Jonas Brothers after the trio announced they were parting ways to focus on individual projects. In an official statement from the band, Kevin Jonas, Nick Jonas and Joe Jonas stressed that after several creative differences with the direction of the group moving forward, they decided to take an indefinite break.

While there was a lot of tension between the three brothers, Nick later revealed that the real reason they broke up was that the group simply wasn’t selling as many records as they did in their heyday. He openly admitted in a 2019 interview that even their tours weren’t selling as well as they once were, and it was beginning to worry a lot of people.

It was the “Jealous” singer who then broke it to his siblings that the best thing for the group moving forward was to split up so that everyone could focus their attention on their own individual projects — and apparently, not everybody was on the same page as Nick on the idea of calling it quits. Here’s the lowdown.

Nick Was At Fault For The Split

While nobody is really to blame for their split, Nick admitted that he was the one who voiced his concerns the most about the future of the Jonas Brothers.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, he admitted that things had taken a turn for the group and their lack of success in the years leading up to their breakup.

Sure, while they were also dealing with creative differences between one another, the real issue stemmed around the fact that fans were no longer connected with the music, and the evidence was all over sales for any of their projects at the time.

The JoBros weren’t the hottest boyband anymore, and Nick seemed very aware of that. He confided in his brothers on the idea of taking a break and allowing everyone to step away to focus on their own career paths for a while, but according to The Voice judge, his siblings were furious.

“To call it creative differences is almost too simple,” Nick said. “And I think a lot of people lost the appetite for what we were putting into the world. So, you know, we were putting up shows that weren’t selling. We were making music that I don’t think we were all super proud of, and it wasn’t connected.

“I said, ‘You know, I feel like the Jonas Brothers should be no more, and we should go on individual journeys.’ And it didn’t go so well.”

Joe said that Nick’s open and honest conversation about not wanting to move forward with the group as a collective three-piece stunned him enough to know that the end of the Jonas Brothers was near.

Nick chimed in and added that breaking the news to his brothers that he was not going to continue working on a new album with Kevin and Nick wasn’t something anybody expected — Nick even feared his siblings would never speak to him again, but he ultimately knew it was the wisest decision for all of them.

Joe continued by chiming in, “I think we – we definitely were supposed to go through all of what we went through to get to this point, definitely.

I think it was, it was kind of, I guess you could say destiny, whatever it may be, but yeah, we got a do-over, and I think this time around we’re going to do it right.”

It seemed as if Nick was right after all: the band needed a break because when their comeback was announced in the summer of 2019, the Jonas Brothers scored one of the highest first-week numbers in sales with their fifth studio album, Happiness Begins.

In June 2019, the record was released and pushed a whopping 414,000 copies in its first week, subsequently earning it the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 200.

Its accompanying tour, the Happiness Begins Tour, was just as successful, selling over 1 million tickets and grossing a whopping $121.7 million at the worldwide box office.

Not to mention their lead single, Sucker, dominated the charts with another top spot placement on Billboard’s Hot 100, selling over 5 million copies worldwide and becoming one of the band’s biggest hits to date.

In an Instagram Live session back in March 2021, Joe confirmed that he and his brothers were gearing up to commence work on new music in the studio.

He confirmed, “We plan on releasing a body of work. We’re not 100 percent sure when, obviously this last year kind of shifted timelines quite a bit for everyone, so that’s our reasoning. We’re not holding anything back from the fans that want new music, but we’ve got some good stuff we’re working on and we can’t wait to share it with you guys.”
