Why Lorde Left Social Media

Lorde first came to prominence nearly a decade ago after the release of her debut studio album, 'Pure Heroine', in 2013. The star releases an array of hit songs, including her most known, 'Royals', solidifying her spit in the industry. While Lorde's music was always her claim to fame, Lorde gained a lot of recognition after becoming close to none other than Taylor Swift. The duo became such close friends that Lorde was officially brought into the Swift Squad alongside Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, and Karlie Kloss, to name a few.

Despite being at the top of her game, especially after the 2017 release of her album, 'Melodrama', Lorde completely fell off the face of the Earth and ditched social media for good. By the end of 2017, Lorde had stopped posting to her Instagram and Twitter accounts, sparking a lot of concern over why. The social media hiatus lasted a whopping 3 years as Lorde broke her silence for the very first time in October 2020. So, what inspired her to leave altogether? Well, it wasn't for the most positive of reasons.

According to Lorde herself, she could no longer bear the stress and anxiety that social media cast upon her daily life. "Part of what made me peace out on social media", she told Cazzie David, "apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our plant, about systemic racism, and about police brutality in this country", Lorde finished. This is certainly a feeling many of us know all too well, however, Lorde broke her silence for the first time in 3 years after posting to her Instagram Stories.

This past October, Lorde returned to Instagram to encourage her New Zealand fans to vote in the country's election. It is clear that the singer takes issues surrounding climate change and social justice very seriously, making her return to social media a positive one, as she holds quite an influence upon her millions and millions of fans. While she has yet to post or share anything since, fans are certain she will be making a comeback soon, to both her online accounts and to the world of music!
