It's easy to get invested in a love triangle, as these stories are juicy and fascinating. When they're fictional, they're super entertaining, like when Joey loved Dawson and Pacey on Dawson's Creek.

There have been several forgotten love triangles among famous people in Hollywood and there's one in particular that really gets people talking: the Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, and Jason Patric love triangle.

Let's explore what happened.

The '90s Love Triangle

Today, fans wonder how close Julia is to her niece Emma Roberts, but back in the '90s, Julia Roberts was one of the most sought after movie actresses and she was definitely the talk of the town.

Here's what Julia Roberts fans should know about her romantic history: she was engaged to Kiefer Sutherland and their wedding day was set for June 14th, 1991.

According to E! News, the ceremony was going to be on a sound stage at Twentieth Century Fox, but it would look like a garden, so it would be totally beautiful.

Reports came out that Roberts went on a date with Jason Patric and then they went to Ireland together. Sutherland left the house he and Roberts lived in and then news broke that the wedding was off.

According to Closer Weekly, Julia Roberts and Dylan McDermott were engaged, and after that ended, she began dating Kiefer Sutherland. They broke the news that they were getting married when they hadn't been dating for a full year, and then the wedding didn't happen.

While it's always big news when celebrities are dating or engaged or they have just had an incredible wedding, this was even bigger news because Patric and Sutherland were pals. It's definitely easy to imagine how people reacted to this at the time, especially since Roberts starred in many huge 90's movies.

What The Actors Say

What do they have to say about the love triangle?

According to E! News, when Kiefer Sutherland was interviewed by Rolling Stone in 2006, he answered a question about forgiving Jason Patric.

He said, "It's not a matter of that. We were friends, and I'm surprised that I never got a call from him saying I've fallen in love with da-da-da. Instead, I found out from a stranger."

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Roberts shared that the wedding wasn't canceled super last minute, although that's how the press made it seem. She said, "I’ve read 'days before,' 'hours before,' 'minutes before.' And the fact is, it doesn’t matter how many times you say it he wasn’t waiting at the altar, it wasn’t the day before, somebody else didn’t tell him, he didn’t see it on TV people don’t want to know." She continued, "Anyway, good for him that he responded the way he did."

Recently, the three actors were on a podcast called "Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum" and they talked about the love triangle, which is incredible since it must have been very awkward and tough at the time.

Patric explained on the podcast, "The thing is, she’s not here in this room. So I feel strange talking about what she told me or what she told Kiefer because she can speak for herself. But the large stuff [reported by] the press, being invited to the wedding and taking off with the bride — that’s all bull***t. Kiefer’s specific relationship, and what they were at the time, that’s theirs.”

While this love triangle sounds pretty dramatic, Patric and Sutherland were in a Broadway play together in 2011 called That Championship Season. It sounds like things are truly good between the former friends again. Patric explained that when they reunited, "there were a few words and more of a laugh and a toast. I’ve said before that [he and Julia] have both been subsequently married since a couple times and I think they’re both very happy in their lives. What lasted after all that is me and Kiefer as 35-year buddies.”

It's definitely a juicy love triangle, but it seems like everyone is very understanding about it now, and Sutherland has even said that Roberts was totally right.

According to Nicki Swift, Sutherland told People in 2016 that Roberts was brave when she could tell that marriage wasn't the right call for them.

He said, "We were both young, and we were both very much in love, we had decided that we wanted to get married." He explained that she was "arguably the most famous woman in the world" and that she was super brave to say that it wasn't right and that they should stop the wedding.
