Marcus Mumford doesn't have to wait for Carey Mulligan. They've had each other for years.

Forget the Biebers, the Jonases, and even the Sussexes and the Queen and Prince Phillip; the cutest couple award goes to Mumford and Mulligan. Did you see how adorable they were at this year's Oscars? When Renée Zellweger called the list of actresses nominated for Best Actress, you could see how proud Mumford was of his wife.

Seeing them together at the awards only made us more curious about their long-time romance. Just when we thought they couldn't get any cuter, they prove us wrong when we learn about how they met.

On the scale of cute, we'd say their first meeting is in between Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila's and Hailey and Justin Bieber's. But that's just their first meeting. Read on to find out all the ways the couple is cute.

They Met When They Were Just 12 Years Old

Mulligan knows a thing or two about Jane Austen, having starred as Kitty Bennet, the most annoying of the Bennet sisters, in Joe Wright's film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

As Bustle writes, Mulligan and Mumford's romance "could fit into a Jane Austen novel." It's true, but Mulligan knew how to court a man long before she played Kitty.

The pair met when they were 12 years old at a Christian summer camp (both their parents are strict religious goers). They must have formed a crush on each other or, at the very least, liked each other as friends so much that they wanted to keep in touch. So they wrote letters to each other in an Austen-like fashion.

Eventually, they did lose touch, as they were trying to make names for themselves in the industry, Mulligan in acting and Mumford in music. Ever heard of the little alt-folk band the Mumford & Sons?

They dated around in their early careers, Mumford dated singer Laura Marling and Mulligan briefly dated Eddie Redmayne. They didn't know they were meant to be together until 2011 when they met again after Mulligan showed up at a Mumford & Sons party in Nashville with Jake Gyllenhaal.

As Bustle also points out, Mulligan was either just friends with Gyllenhaal, or she dropped him really quick to be with Mumford because they were spotted having dinner together a month later.

Mumford had to go on tour shortly after that date, but sparks had clearly flown for the reacquainted friends-turned-something-more because they kept in touch again while he was away. Possibly even taking up their old habit of sending each other letters again.

A year later, in 2012, the couple tied the knot in a wedding where both of Mumford's parents, who were still involved with the church, officiated their son and daughter-in-law's marriage.

Colin Firth, Sienna Miller, and Jake Gyllenhaal (we're going with friends) were among the guests. Vogue UK reported that Firth gave a "touching speech," and they danced their first dance as a married couple to Adele, who performed at the reception. Mulligan looked stunning in a Prada dress.

Three years later, they welcomed their first child, Evelyn, and then in 2017, their son Wilfred.

They've Started To Let The Public Into Their Lives

The couple is mostly private, but they've started letting us in on little details about their relationship over the years.

We haven't really gotten any more information about their pen pal days, but after they got married, Mulligan told The Telegraph that the letters, more like love notes, had continued into their marriage.

"I think they’re becoming a lost art form, which is very sad," she said. "To have a love letter from someone, to hold it in your hand and know that you can keep it for your whole life… well, that’s an amazing thing."

In 2015, Mulligan told Vogue that she likes keeping one thing private; her relationship with Mumford. "Marcus is the only thing that’s mine that I can keep totally away, so I try to."

Since they married, we've only seen brief glimpses into how they constantly support each other by seeing them at concerts and awards shows (and royal weddings) in both their respective fields. More recently, they've begun to give us an even bigger window into their lives.

Mumford got an Instagram account in March 2020, and his wife directed some videos on it for him, including the outtakes for his appearance on The Tonight Show, Starring Jimmy Fallon's concert from home.

Actress Sienna Miller, one of Mulligan's friends, has divulged some details about their lives as well. She says that they both come from strong families, so they've adopted that lifestyle into their own. Mumford plays at Glastonbury, and Mulligan wins Oscars, but they can come home to their farm and live like normal people after all that.

"It’s an amazing balance they’ve managed to strike," Miller told Vogue.

Besides having similar tastes when it comes to being romantic, they also share a love for charity work. They revealed they're both hard at work being ambassadors for War Child UK and have traveled to Congo to help the cause.

This past month, Mulligan hosted SNL. In her monologue, she said it was great to be there because Mumford had played on the show a couple of times. He couldn't make it because he was at home with the kids. Well, maybe not, because he appeared out of the crowd to say hi.

Even though Mulligan has said she likes to take roles that scare her because it's exciting, it doesn't look like she took that approach with starting her relationship with Mumford. She seemed completely at ease about it, and it worked.

Thank god she doesn't share the same ideals as her character Daisy Buchannan either. She's not a little fool, and Mumford is not a brute. He isn't her little lion man either. He was brave enough to talk to her and brave enough to love her.
