No one hears too much from Gavin Rossdale in 2020. The musician and former actor has taken a time out and since he's no longer married to Gwen Stefani, he's not really in the spotlight except when people ask about how they're raising their children.

Fans love that Stefani and Blake Shelton are engaged but once upon a time, Stefani was in love with Rossdale and it didn't seem like they would ever split up. The couple got married in 2002 and by 2016, they were divorced. Fans would love to know what made them decide to end their marriage. Let's take a look at what happened.

What Really Happened

Gwen Stefani is a natural brunette and fans are used to seeing her wearing cool outfits all the time. Even though her unique look gets a lot of attention, she has also had an interesting love life.

There are many stories of celebrity couples whose marriages break up because the husband is intimate with the nanny, and according to Us Weekly, that is what happened in Jude Law and Sienna Miller's marriage.

As it turns out, this is why Stefani and Rossdale got divorced as well. Rossdale had an affair with the family's nanny. According to Cheat Sheet, this was absolutely devastating for Stefani and it really tore the couple apart.

Stefani said, “My dreams were shattered. All I wanted my whole life was to have babies, be married, like what my parents have."

According to Harper's Bazaar, Stefani learned what was going on in February 2015. She said, "It was the beginning of hell. Like six, seven, eight months of torture, trying to figure out this big secret." Stefani shared that because of the couple's custody arrangement, they each see their kids 50 percent of the time. She said that was really difficult for her and her statement about it is so heartbreaking: "It was so insane because not only did my family break up, but then my kids are taken away like half the time, so that was really like, 'What?! What did I do?"

Us Weekly reported that Rossdale and the nanny, Mindy Mann, were together for a period of three years. When Stefani went on the iPad that the family shared, she saw some text messages and also some obvious plans for them to meet up in person, and then she knew what was going on.

It's so sad to imagine how Stefani must have felt, and all these years later, Rossdale has spoken out about how this was a negative experience for him as well. In an interview with The Guardian, the musician was asked about the time when he was most embarrassed, and he said, "The gross and lopsided spectre of the crumbling of my marriage."

Co-Parenting

When Rossdale and Stefani announced their divorce, they showed that they're devoted to their children and that they were always going to look out for them. Their official statement said, "While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment," according to The Mirror. They are parents to three boys: 14-year-old Kingston, 12-year-old Zuma, and six-year-old Apollo.

Rossdale has talked about co-parenting with Stefani and he said he loves being with his kids. He said, "When I had all four kids -- Daisy, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo -- staying with me on my birthday it was magical."

According to ET Online, Rossdale explained moving on from the divorce like this: "Life is just a series of chapters, and it’s essential to try not to bring older chapters into new chapters."

The Covid-19 pandemic has made co-parenting very different, and Rossdale was interviewed by People in April 2020 about the situation. He said "It's a tricky situation for all divorced parents" and mentioned that his children stayed with him for two weeks and then went to Stefani and Shelton's ranch in Oklahoma. The kids would FaceTime with Rossdale regularly, so it's sweet to hear that they were able to stay in touch.
