We have to agree with Alicia Silverstone, Clueless was iconic for its time. The 1995 classic coming-of-age comedy has left a wonderful legacy that fans still are curious about to this day. This includes all of the fantastic behind-the-scenes secrets from the set, and one of these secrets is the truth about Cher and Josh's kiss.

Every film of this genre ends with a big kiss. And in 1995's Clueless, that big kiss was between Alicia Silverstone's Cher and Paul Rudd's Josh. Of course, this pairing was odd, to say the least, mostly because of their familial relationship... But the chemistry between the characters (as well as the actors who played them) was palpable. Therefore, we totally got behind their climatic embrace at the wedding of Mr. Hall and Miss Geist. Thanks to an article by Vulture, we've learned a few secrets from the day of the shoot, including how uncomfortable Paul Rudd was with an aspect of the kiss and how a music changed really angered a famous band from the 1990s. Let's take a look...

Shooting The Wedding Was Complicated For Two Different Reasons

According to interviews with the cast and crew of writer/director Amy Heckerling's Clueless, shooting the wedding scene (which included the kiss) was made difficult by two things... Firstly, the weather just sucked!

"We must have set up that wedding five or six times," Clueless' production designer Steven Jordan said to Vulture. "We would set it up in the backyard the day before. The weather would come in, we’d take it all in and dry it all out. The rain on the movie that year, in January, was just phenomenal. And finally, the sun came out. We were able to shoot it."

The other issue that the crew faced on the day of the wedding shoot was the cast itself... Mainly, Paul Rudd. This is because Paul hadn't shot with the rest of the cast yet and was all about having fun with his new buddies, co-stars Breckin Meyer and Donald Faison.

While improvising the "I'm totally buggin' myself" bit, Donald and Paul even started to roughhouse a bit.

"We got real punchy and couldn’t stop, to the point where the crew and Amy, they were getting a little annoyed," Paul Rudd admitted. "We were shooting outside. We were racing against the light: Come on, guys. Keep it together."

Paul Rudd Was Nervous About The Kiss Itself And The Crew Didn't Know What To Make Of It

Having Cher kiss her former step-brother caused some of the crew to cringe... or... at the very least... raise their eyebrows.

"[When Cher and Josh kiss] in fact, we all had to wrap our head around: Are they brother and sister?" assistant director Danny Silverberg told Vulture for their oral history of the kiss. "They’re not brother and sister, are they? No. They’re kissing right in front of us. No, they’re not."

As for Paul Rudd, he had a slightly different issue with it all...

"[With the kiss] you get a little nervous," Paul Rudd admitted. "But also, I was psyched. Growing up you hear these actors, and granted, they’re talking about sex scenes and not just kisses, but they’re like, 'Oh, it’s all technical. Nothing’s there. Nobody’s excited. It’s all just kind of embarrassing.' I remember thinking, 'Is that really true?' And then I remember thinking, 'This is pretty awesome.' I sound like a total perv.

How General Public Made It A 'Movie Moment' And Angered Oasis

According to producer Adam Schroeder, the Oasis song "Whatever" was purchased to be a major part of Clueless.

"The deal was that they were the end title song, but the song [would start] before the movie’s over," Adam Schroeder. "So it’s not just on the credits, it’s on the end of the movie. That was very important to them… But it wasn’t as happy and fun as you wanted with Josh and Cher, the wedding, and then Josh and Cher kissing. We ended up using "Tenderness," the [General Public] song. Oasis wasn’t happy about that, because we wanted to go from "Tenderness" right into the Oasis song on the credits. And it was end credits, so it was actually good. End credits are usually not bad, but they’re a scroll of crew. But this was actually [the names of the] actors and the director and the production heads and it was this kind of shiny thing we had designed. But they weren’t happy with that. So we ended up not being able to use that Oasis song "Whatever" which was a bummer. Because that seemed so perfect."

Luckily, "Tenderness" more than made up for the loss and helped make Cher and Josh's kiss movie magic.
