Not long before the recent rumors that he's dating Angelina Jolie, The Weeknd was still being linked with two of his high-profile exes, Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez. The Starboy singer whose real name is Abel Tesfaye dated the supermodel from 2015 to 2016. In January 2017, he was spotted making out with the Lose You to Love Me songstress. But 10 months later, they called it quits and Tesfaye got back with Hadid. The two finally split in 2019. In August 2020, a source close to them said they "remain on friendly terms." Still, fans think The Weeknd's fake plastic surgery was a dig at the 2021 Cannes red carpet showstopper.

The singer surprised his fans in his Save Your Tears music video when he came out with an exaggerated altered face. It was a sequel to his After Hours era where he wore bloody bandages around his face. Fans were quick to associate the plastic surgery theme with Tesfaye's ex, Bella Hadid, who is constantly accused of having some work done on her face. Professional plastic surgeons have called her out on TikTok and YouTube as well. But why would The Weeknd shade her if they're on good terms? Is it even really about her? Here's the real story.

The Truth About Bella Hadid And The Weeknd's Relationship Today

In June 2020, nine months after their split, an insider told Us Weekly that the 24-year-old model and 31-year-old Blinding Lights singer had been communicating again. "Bella and The Weeknd have been in touch recently," they said. "Bella isn’t dating anyone at the moment. She is so busy traveling and working nonstop and she’s mostly focused on her career right now." They revealed that Hadid still had feelings for Tesfaye and that it's possible they'd get back together again. But with Angelina Jolie in The Weeknd's life these days and a new man in Hadid's, it's obvious that the two have moved on.

Recently, the international supermodel posted a blurred picture of her smooching her new boyfriend, Marc Kalman. She captioned it, "Time of my life ⏳🫀🍾 Healthy, Working and Loved ❤️‍🔥🌹" The photo was last in an 8-photo-and-video carousel. Hadid was certainly not trying to make it some kind of huge announcement. Her new relationship with the art director who's worked with Travis Scott for years is a lot lowkey compared with her romance with The Weeknd. But fans say it looks like the real thing. The new couple was all smiles in the candid photo, obviously smitten by one another.

Bella Hadid's Response To Plastic Surgery Rumors

The runway stunner has addressed the plastic surgery rumors before. Even her mother, Yolanda Hadid has defended her and sister Gigi who has been modeling since two years old. "None of my children have never done fillers or Botox or put anything foreign in their bodies," the former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star told a fan on Instagram in 2019. "They know better after seeing what I went through." The mother of the supermodels admitted to getting botox, fillers, and breast implants before. She said the "toxicity of it all almost killed [her]" that's why she had them removed.

Bella Hadid also slammed her Instagram bullies before. She also told InStyle in 2018, "People think I got all this surgery or did this or that. And you know what? We can do a scan of my face, darling. I’m scared of putting fillers into my lips. I wouldn’t want to mess up my face." But with a lot of plastic surgeons debunking her claims, emphasizing her "obvious nose job," fans are surely not buying the statements made by the Hadids.

What The Weeknd's Fake Plastic Surgery Really Meant

The Weeknd hasn't really discussed the meaning of his bloody bandages and shocking fake plastic surgery. It's all a mystery, including the fact that he's been wearing red jackets since 2019, as early as pre-bandages including a guest appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Aside from speculating that it was a jab at his ex, some fans also assumed that it was some sort of commentary on the current generation's obsession with Instagram filters.

Tesfaye's Save Your Tears look had an uncanny resemblance with that time's hit Instagram filter, handsome Squidward. So if we're going to make a wild guess about what it meant, The Weeknd was probably either acknowledging Hollywood's ridiculous beauty standards or was just having fun with prosthetics. But we can't deny how parts of the song seem to be inspired by Bella Hadid — "I saw you dancing in a crowded room / You look so happy when I’m not with you / But then you saw me, caught you by surprise / A single teardrop falling from your eye"

It is rumored to be a reference to the singer's run-in with the supermodel at Catch One nightclub a few weeks after their final split in 2019. Reports said that Hadid left as soon as Tesfaye showed up. Coincidentally, his other ex, Selena Gomez also featured a track called Crowded Room in her 2020 album Rare.
