At the height of Michael Jackson’s career, he was such a massive star that it seemed like he could make just about anything he desired a reality. After all, there aren’t too many pop stars who’ve had so much money and clout that they could own the rights to The Beatles’ music.

Of course, it should go without saying that in reality, there were lots of things that Michael Jackson couldn’t make happen no matter how hard he tried. For example, even though Jackson reportedly offered to pay a fortune to own Joseph “The Elephant Man” Merrick’s skeleton, his bid was roundly rejected. On top of that, Jackson once had plans to collaborate with Madonna but that never became a reality.

Given the fact that Michael Jackson and Madonna were considered the king and queen of pop for a long time, it makes a lot of sense that they almost recorded a song together. On the other hand, another one of Jackson’s proposed projects is a lot more surprising since most people never would have thought that a Jackson and Harry Potter crossover could have taken place.

Major Movie Plans

During Michael Jackson’s life, the world-famous singer got the chance to act several times. Most notably, Jackson played Scarecrow in the classic 1978 film The Wiz. Jackson also made a highly memorable cameo appearance in Men in Black II as a secret agent from the titular organization. On top of those two roles, Jackson also starred in short films like Ghosts, Moonwalker, and Captain EO and that is to say, nothing about the acting he did for his music videos including Thriller.

Despite the acting experience that Michael Jackson managed to accumulate during his life, it is clear that the powers that be in Hollywood never took him seriously in that light. Sure, most movie producers would have loved to have Jackson record a song for their project’s soundtrack but they weren’t interested in having Michael work on for them as an actor.

Of course, most of Michael Jackson’s fans likely assumed that he never become a real movie star because he was more interested in his music career. As it turns out, however, Jackson tried hard to turn himself into a force in the entertainment business as a whole. Unlike when Michael Jackson became determined to make Bart Simpson a pop star and he pulled off that feat, his acting plans were rejected at every turn.

Over the years, it has been revealed that Michael Jackson tried hard to find someone who would let him star in his dream movie project. For example, before Stan Lee passed away, the Marvel legend revealed that Jackson wanted to play Spider-Man on the big screen. As strange as that idea is, it also is remarkable that Jackson once lobbied George Lucas to be cast as Jar Jar Binks. Amazingly enough, Michael also wanted to play Willy Wonka in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Jackson tried to be a part of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Another Rejected Idea

Even after Michael Jackson was rejected by the powers that be in Hollywood again and again over the years, he seemingly never gave up. After all, according to J.K. Rowling, Jackson once approached her about working together on turning the Harry Potter books into a musical.

In 2015, J.K. Rowling sat down for an interview with one of the most popular television personalities of all time, Oprah Winfrey. Of course, Winfrey’s celebrity interviews often could be quite intriguing as Oprah was able to get many stars to lower their defensives and she was unafraid to ask the occasional tough question. During Winfrey’s Rowling interview, she asked some pretty fascinating questions including one in which Oprah implied that J.K. had allowed the Potter universe to become overly commercialized. “Were you reluctant to increase the empire? Meaning the theme parks, the doll figures. I mean, there is an entire Potter universe. Anything you can imagine in the world, it’s been Potterized.”

In response to Oprah Winfrey’s question about all of the Harry Potter universe content and merchandise, J.K. Rowling revealed there was one potential wizarding world project she turned down. “I can only say to you, it could be so much worse. Michael Jackson wanted to do the musical. I said no to a lot of things. I have a say. For me I love the films, I love the books, and there are elements that are really fun around it.” While it is unclear if Jackson’s Potter plans involved a song-focused film or a stage musical, either way, it is an amazing idea to consider.
