After leaving Grey's Anatomy, Chyler Leigh reprised her role of Dr. Lexie Grey in the show's spin-off Private Practice. She appeared in "You Break My Heart", the fifteenth episode of the show's fifth season, which served as a crossover episode between the two shows.

Leigh came out as a member of the LGBT community in an essay she wrote for Create Change, a for-profit organization she co-founded. She revealed that her Supergirl character's coming out in season 2 of the show really helped her accept herself.

"What I didn’t realize was how the scene where she finally confessed her truth would leap off the pages of the script and genuinely become a variation of my own. IRL “My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest each take we filmed, every time presenting another opportunity to get those honest words out of my mouth," wrote the actress in her essay.

That is why she decided to partner with Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health, an initiative whose goal is to empower people who suffer from mental health conditions to speak up about them. "Joining Be Vocal is my way of saying, ‘OK. I’m ready to talk.’ I know that there are millions of people who feel the same way. So let’s do it together," said the actress who was diagnosed with the condition when she was in her late 20s.

Even though her Dr. Lexie Grey character died back in 2012, Chyler Leigh still managed to return to Grey's Anatomy for one more episode. In the recently aired episode "Breathe", her character appears in Dr. Meredith Grey's dreams while she's in a coma. Due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions, the actress couldn't travel to the filming location so she filmed her parts in front of the green screen, which the fans weren't too crazy about.
