Phoebe Cates had a blossoming career in Hollywood when she starred in 1982's Fast Times at Ridgemont High at 17-years-old. Cates' role in the movie gained her loads of attention and it would help launch her acting career, later appearing in other popular 80's flicks like Gremlins and Drop Dead Fred.

Phoebe Cates rose to fame after her appearance in the '80s coming-of-age drama Fast Times at Ridgemont High where she starred as Linda Berrett and wore that infamous red bikini.

Since then, the actress would star in several movies throughout the 1980s, including the two Gremlin films, and would grace the covers of several teen magazines. Looper stated that she starred in 12 movies in 12 years, until she left Hollywood for good in 1994.

9 She Got Married At 25 To Kevin Kline

Before she left her acting career, Phoebe Cates met actor Kevin Kline during an audition for the movie The Big Chill. While Cates did not end up getting the part (it went to actress  Meg Tilly), she would go on to date Kline and in 1989, the two stars got married.

According to Looper, Cates and Kline had a 16-year-age difference with the actress only 25 at the time while Kline was 41. Kline was a successful star who had won two Tony Awards and acted alongside Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice. 

8 She Became A Mother To Two Kids

Even though Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline had such a large age gap, they would have a very successful marriage and welcomed two kids, a son named Owen in 1991, and a daughter named Greta, born in 1994.

The year her daughter was born would also be the same year she would act in her last film, Princess Caraboo. Cates and Kline moved to Manhattan across from Central Park and would quietly raise their family.

7 She Focused Solely On Motherhood

According to Country Living, the two actors made a plan to "alternate acting roles" so that one of them would always be with their children. However, Kevin Kline told Playboy in 1998 that "whenever it's been her slot to work, Phoebe has chosen to stay with the children."

It appeared that Cates wanted to solely focus on raising her family while her husband took several acting gigs to provide for their family. He continues to act today, lending his voice to the animated show Bob's Burgers, starring as The Belcher's landlord, Calvin Fischoeder.

6 Cates And Her Family Kept A Low Profile

Moving to the Upper East Side of Manhattan worked well for the famous family as Cates shied away from acting. According to Country Living, the Kline family continues to "maintain an intentionally low profile at home" in New York City.

However, the Hollywood couple has been spotted attending New York Knicks games together, usually sitting courtside, and sharing a laugh.

5 She's Celebrating 31 Years With Her Husband

Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline have one of the most successful marriages in Hollywood. The couple has been married for 32 years and has proven that their large age gap hasn't hindered their romance one bit.

In 2002, Kline admitted to EW that when he met Cates, he wasn't too sure what they would share in common, "When I first met Phoebe, I remember thinking, She's too happy to be with me. She's too enthusiastic about life... What'll we talk about?" However, it went better than expected for the pair.

4 She Took Up Two Acting Gigs

Phoebe Cates did not star in any television or movie roles since 1994, but she did make an exception in 2001 for her good friend and Fast Times at Ridgemont High co-star Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Cates, her husband, and their two children all starred in the movie The Anniversary Party, which was also co-written by Leigh. According to Looper, the former actress also worked on the 2015 LEGO Dimensions video game, where she voiced her character from the movie the Gremlins. 

3 Cates And Her Husband Have Made A Few Appearances On The Red Carpet

While fans barely see Phoebe Cates anymore, she has made a few appearances with Kline on several red carpets for award shows, including the Oscars, and has been spotted attending movie premieres.

The two stars support one another even though Cates no longer acts, and they continue to have a very prosperous marriage with Kline admitting that their secret is they are "both sensible, and we don't separate for long periods of time."

2 She Opened Up Her Own Boutique In New York City

While fans won't be seeing Phoebe Cates in any upcoming movies, they may spot her in her New York City boutique called Blue Tree. According to Travel and Leisure her store which is found on Madison Ave., boasts a unique collection of clothing and household items.

According to the publication, Cates' shop is a "mom-and-pop store without the pop, though Phoebe does credit her husband, the actor, Kevin Kline, with the name - a reference to the blue trees in Fauvist paintings."

1 Cates' Daughter Understands Her Mom's Decision To Leave Hollywood Behind

Phoebe Cates' daughter Greta Kline is now 30-years-old and has a better understanding as to why her mother chose to leave Hollywood behind and focus on raising her family instead.

Kline, who performs under the musician name Frankie Cosmos, shared, "I didn't really understand how fame works until I'd gotten my own little taste of it. Now I'm thinking more about what it means to be in the public eye. My parents really weren't ever, like, into celebrity culture."
