Back when The Hills was trendy, Spencer and Heidi were at the center of some drama. From Heidi's friends not approving of Spencer to some on-screen spats, it didn't seem like those two crazy kids would make it.

Yet Spencer and Heidi's wild wedding was filmed for the MTV reality series, and though it was definitely an event to remember, the two are happily married today (despite at least one divorce scare). In the years since The Hills went off the air, fans have followed the dramatic relationship of Spencer and Heidi. Yet they did stick it out and later welcomed their son, Gunner, in 2017.

Fans have also been able to catch up with the famous pair on the reboot The Hills: New Beginnings, and there's more excitement on the horizon; Heidi announced she and Spencer were expecting their second child in June 2022.

Things haven't always been picture-perfect, though, especially when it came to the pair's finances. In fact, Heidi and Spencer blew their entire $10M net worth at one point.

Updated August 8 2022: Heidi and Spencer did lose their millions-plus net worth, but as of 2022, are now worth an estimated $300,000 combined.

Spencer Pratt's Unique Passion Cost The Couple $10M

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag actually spent their $10 million net worth. According to CNBC, Heidi is great at saving money and Spencer enjoys spending it. The couple began living in a Carpinteria, California home since Spencer's mom and dad were the owners and they didn't have to pay any rent.

The couple went pretty wild spending money, from thousands of dollars on bodyguards, bottles of wine, and shopping.

According to CNBC, the couple made $2 million annually at the height of their reality TV fame, and Spencer is said to have been paid $175,000 for each episode of The Hills.

But Heidi and Spencer reportedly weren't careful with their finances at all.

Heidi explored singing, and she and Spencer paid for her to record and release an album, which cost $2.5 million.

But perhaps most interesting of all is that Spencer Pratt got really interested in crystals, and he spent a ton of money on that hobby. It definitely seems like some of Spencer and Heidi's financial trouble came from this passion.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Spencer bought a lot of crystals for $500,000.

That number is also said to be much higher: Cheat Sheet reported that Spencer spent $1 million on crystals. Not only that, but he also began selling the special rocks.

Spencer's Business Model Is... Crystals?

Spencer Pratt talked about crystals in an interview with Hypebae and he talked about his website, Pratt Daddy, where people can purchase crystals.

He said that people should follow their gut instincts: "I always say if the crystal doesn’t jump out at you then that’s probably not a crystal you should get. When I’m shopping for crystals in person or on WhatsApp through the miners, I know right away like 'Oh, I need that.' So yeah, I think there’s power through our devices."

Spencer also talked about being inspired by a book called Love Is The Earth by Melody and realizing that there was a lot to learn about this world.

The reality star said, "I really just started connecting the crystals with my daily life and I started wearing them as bracelets and in my pockets. I was wearing Gucci fanny packs full of crystals. So, Love is in the Earth; once I read that book, there was no turning back."

The Pandemic Hurt Heidi And Spencer's Income

In an interview with Money.com, Spencer Pratt talked about the success of his crystals business, saying, “My customers now can’t stop buying them. People get them, and they’re just like these are the greatest things ever, because you can’t get a crystal like this anywhere." He said that he sources the best crystals and that others "cannot get to my level."

But while the couple is doing better and had been making money from selling crystals, Spencer Pratt told The Sun that it was tough to make money during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like many people who went through financial hardship during this time, Spencer shared that he had to fire several staff members and that the cash wasn't coming in like it was before. Spencer said that it was tough to talk about this on TV: "I mean I obviously didn't want to show that like our really successful crystal business made us go broke like that."

Spencer and Heidi also began spending a ton of money on wine during the COVID-19 pandemic and realized that they had to stop that and save some money.

As of August 2022, Heidi and Spencer were worth a reported $300K, combined. It's a far cry from the $10M they once had, but it's better than a negative amount!
