Laura Prepon just revealed that she is no longer practicing Scientology. The change happened years ago, but the That '70s Show star just announced her decision publicly. Scientology is a set of beliefs and practices invented by author L. Ron Hubbard, and an associated movement. It has very much been defined as a cult, a business or a new religious movement. Many celebrities have joined the religious movement, and many others have left and spoken out about it. Prepon is now one of them.

The Orange is the New Black star, 41, spoke to PEOPLE about her decision, saying that her family was a big influence in her decision. "As a brand-new mother, I was reflecting so much on my own upbringing and the way I was mothered."

Her husband, actor Ben Foster, is not a Scientologist, and they didn't want to raise their children as that either. This is why Laura Prepon left Scientology.

8 How She Got Involved

Back in 2015, Laura Prepon did a cover story with Scientology Magazine Celebrity talking about her time with the organization. “So when I first got into Scientology, I did Personal Values and Integrity and then Overcoming Ups and Downs in Life. These courses touched on the observations I was aware of when I was younger. It was right there in black and white. It was amazing, and I felt that finally something was speaking my language. It totally connected with me. Pretty soon after that I got onto the Purification Rundown, and I started moving up the Bridge.”

It is not clear how she exactly got involved, but it may have had something to do with her mother and how she taught her to be bulimic. Prepon longed for some sort of connection.

7 What Prepon Has Said Over The Years

On the process of auditing, Prepon said, "Honestly, I’ve become more me. The auditing has stripped away all of this charge, false ideas, decisions and mis-emotions that were affecting me."

"I feel a lot of the auditing that I’ve had helps me to be willing to go there and be free and vulnerable and really jump into these scenes wholeheartedly," she continued. "It’s so gratifying and fulfilling as an artist to be able to really be there in present time, creating, with no vias. Auditing has helped so much in getting me to this place. I have more to go, and can’t wait for what’s to come.”

6 Who Else Is In Scientology?

There are a surprising amount of celebrities involved in Scientology. Tom Cruise is one of the head honchos and became involved through his first wife, Mimi Rogers. His involvement in the church led to his next two marriages to crumble. John Travolta has been a member since 1975. His late wife, actress Kelly Preston, was also a member up until her death.

Perhaps one of the other reasons Prepon joined is because her That '70s Show cast member, Danny Masterson, might have convinced her to join. He and his entire family were raised Scientologists. "Each service in Scientology is something I have added to my tool box of data for living," Masterson is quoted as saying on the church's website.

5 Who Has Left?

Laura Prepon is not the first celebrity to leave Scientology and speak up about it. While many stars are still involved with the business and fully believe in it, others have put Scientology on blast and left. Stars like Leah Remini, who wrote a tell-all book and a TV show, left in 2013. Jerry Seinfeld took a few classes but wasn't really interested. Lisa Marie Presley, Beck, Jason Lee and more have all left the Church of Scientology and have not looked back.

4 When She Left

Although the actress has just spoken out about leaving the church now, she did leave about five years ago, right before she welcomed her first child. The actress spoke highly about the organization in the past, so some people were shocked to learn that she had left, especially after just doing an interview about them in 2015.

3 Why She Left

Laura Prepon told PEOPLE that welcoming her daughter, 4, and son, 16 months, with her husband, actor Ben Foster, led her to look inward. "If motherhood has taught me anything so far, it's that something can work out for a period of time and then you move on and evolve from that. As a new mom, I was riddled with anxiety that I had never experienced before. My friends who were mothers with older kids said, 'Laura, this is a phase, you'll move on and then it will be something different.' And that has transcended into other parts of my life. We're all evolving. I always see that with my kids."

2 What Religion Prepon Practices Now

"I've always been very open-minded, even since I was a child. I was raised Catholic and Jewish. I've prayed in churches, meditated in temples. I've studied Chinese meridian theory. I haven't practiced Scientology in close to five years and it's no longer part of my life," Prepon told PEOPLE. Her husband was never a part of Scientology, and her husband was raised Jewish, so they probably want to instill that faith onto their children.

1 She And Her Husband Meditate Together

No longer finding solace in whatever Scientology offered her, Laura Prepon now finds it in meditation. She once said that Scientology relaxed her and made things a lot easier, but that has changed now. Her and Foster meditate daily. "And I'm really liking it because it's something that helps me to hear my own voice and it's something we can do together," she said. Along with meditation, Prepon is spending a lot of her time working from home on her third book and her cookware line, PrepOn Kitchen.
