Music videos can launch songs and stars. If you thought the music video for "Bad Touch" was wild, just wait until you hear the story behind the Bloodhound Gang’s disappearance from the music scene. A staple of middle school dances (and the song that made you question exactly what the radio is and isn’t allowed to play), "Bad Touch" was the big hit from the Bloodhound Gang that many of us remember. While they’ve been active since the 90s, their success has been up and down. In fact, the Bloodhound Gang hit that you remember is a great litmus test for what generation you belong to. Not as popular as some other bands of the time, Bloodhound Gang did well for a little while. With so much popularity and success, how is it possible that they disappeared into the sands of nothingness? Is it yet another band break up? Yes and no. The story involves band disputes, some musical flops, and eggs. Yes, you read that right: eggs played at least a bit of a part in their stepping away from the spotlight.

Back Up: What Happened?!

It’s actually not as ridiculous as you think. Firstly, we want to recognize that the amount of bands out there who have tried to ride one number one hit is huge. Not all of them make it. Some of them do last, but it’s very hard to cement yourself in the public psyche. We personally know several bands who have done well but still aren’t household names. But The Bloodhound Gang… Well, they seemed to have had everything going for them. They followed up a number 1 hit with a bangin’ (literally) music video, and that set the stage for success. An album came, but then the trouble started. The lineup shifted, and a documentary was thought about and then canceled. It was all so disappointing, but not usually enough to deter musicians. Which is why, in 2015, word came out that they were recording another album. But that album never came.

The Big Moment

Even with different band members and the ups and downs of various releases, there was still room for Bloodhound Gang to bounce back. So, why didn’t it happen? Most people point to one incident in Russia which cemented them on that no go list of performing musicians. The Bloodhound Gang guys were performing one day when all of a sudden they were “kicked out of a Russian music festival and pelted with eggs after videos emerged of [their] bass player shoving a Russian flag down his pants.” You can imagine how well that went over. This seemed to be the end of the line for the Bloodhound Gang. While other places didn’t out and out say no to performing or recording, it’s hard to get back on the horse after you’ve been pelted with eggs.

The Bloodhound Gang did the best they could in terms of making it big. They did (almost) everything right. From the number-one single to the catchy music video to the fact that they had a documentary in the works, the Bloodhound Gang were doing well for a time. Unfortunately, a turn over of people caused a domino effect of lacking in progress. Not to mention that poorly planned stage act which was really the nail in the coffin. Now they really are nothing but mammals.
