Johnny Depp is regarded as one of the world’s biggest film stars, having amassed well over $15 billion at the box office thanks to his string of successful flicks, which include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands, Fantastic Beasts, and Public Enemies.

Almost every film Johnny stars in tends to become a blockbuster hit, which is probably why Hollywood studios are willing to spend the big bucks when casting the father of two for their movies, with reports claiming he makes a whopping $20 million per motion picture. Keep in mind that this doesn’t include any backend earnings he receives as part of his lucrative deal so that if the movie is a hit, Johnny’s earnings can increase by almost double.

In 2010, Johnny starred in the ever-so-popular fantasy film Alice in Wonderland, and although he only had a few lines throughout the feature-length flick, the Oscar-nominated actor earned an astounding $68 million — and here’s how he did it.

Johnny Depp’s Salary For ‘Alice in Wonderland’

Prior to landing the role of Mad Hatter, Johnny had already proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with when it came to the box office.

Similar to how Will Smith once ruled the blockbuster scene, whatever movie Johnny appeared in, fans were eager to get a glimpse of the 57-year-old on the big screen — presumably because his characters are so diverse, to the point where you’re almost guaranteed to see him play a character you wouldn’t expect him to portray.

When Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released in 2005, many critics assumed the movie would flop since it was a reboot to 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, where Gene Wilder played the role that Johnny would helm in the revamped version.

But people who doubted that the Kentucky native could pull off the role were probably stunned by the fact that the film ended up grossing close to $500 million at the box office, making it one of Johnny’s highest-grossing family films of all-time.

Needless to say, when the offer to star in Alice in Wonderland came about, it’s believed that the Hollywood veteran took a “low base salary and high backend points,” meaning that if the film was to perform well, Johnny would ultimately make walk away with a huge bonus on top of the fee he was paid to star in the flick.

While it’s unclear how much he was offered for his salary, Alice in Wonderland was a huge success across the world, as it grossed over $1 billion and received favorable reviews from critics, who praised Johnny for his role, despite only having a total of 661 words.

In the end, because the movie had been an enormous success, and thanks to the lucrative deal he negotiated by taking a low salary and an additional backend contract, Johnny ended up making an astounding $68 million, according to Yahoo.

The publication notes that AIW made Johnny the highest-paid actor with the least amount of lines in a film.

In an interview with Collider back in 2010, Johnny claimed that he would’ve played any role in the film so long as he was part of the project, which reunited him with director Tim Burton, who has directed a string of the actor’s films including Sleepy Hollow, Dark Shadows, Sweeney Todd, Corpse Bride, and Edward Scissorhands.

“To be honest, he could have said he wanted me to play Alice and I would have. I would done whatever character Tim wanted,” he said.

“But, certainly, the fact that it was the Mad Hatter was a bonus because of the great challenge to try to find this guy and not just be a rubber ball you heave into an empty room and watch it bounce all over the place. I wanted to find that part of the character, but also a little bit more of the history and gravity to that.”

When asked whether he considered his Hollywood career like a “wonderland,” Johnny didn’t hesitate to agree, noting that he couldn’t believe to still be so successful in the entertainment industry.

“Yeah, the whole ride. My whole experience on the ride, since day one, has been pretty surreal, in this business, and defies logic. I'm still completely shocked that I still get jobs and am still around. But, more than anything, it has been kind of a wonderland. I'm been very lucky.”

Other notable salaries Johnny has earned in the past include $16 million for Fantastic Beast’s second installment and $60 million for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
