Since celebrities began the process of press tours to promote their movies, some stars have had a tough time trying to keep the plot of the film under wraps. Sometimes the interviewer will ask a question that prompts the movie star to reveal bits and pieces of their movie, but occasionally the celebrity will share too much. While this usually doesn't affect the movie sales, it sometimes embarrasses the movie star.
From Tom Holland to Sylvester Stallone, a number of stars have made the blunder of accidentally revealing the plot to their movie. Whether they spoil it on social media during an Instagram Live, on national television with a late-night host, or simply while promoting their film during a press tour. Here are ten movie stars who have spoiled their movies in the past.
10 Will Smith
During a press conference for I Am Legend in Tokyo in 2007, Will Smith thought everyone was familiar with how it ended, seeing as the plotline of the film came from the book of the same name. The issue here was the ending in the film differed from how the novel by Richard Matheson had ended. The producer of the film, Akiva Goldsman, was not happy with Smith and shouted, "Don't give away the ending!" at him.
9 Mark Ruffalo
In 2017, Mark Ruffalo accidentally live-streamed the first 20 minutes of Thor: Ragnarok premiere during an Instagram Live. According to Buzzfeed, the actor was unsure about how to end the stream, so he just placed the phone in his pocket. He eventually ended the Live after a Disney representative came up and told him to turn it off. This wasn't the first time Ruffalo spoiled the ending to one of his movies. During an interview on Good Morning America in 2017, he managed to ruin the ending of Infinity War a year before its release. He shouted, "everybody dies!" and instantly realized what he had done. He also quietly hoped his mistake didn't ruin his whole career.
8 Tom Holland
Tom Holland accidentally revealed that Marvel and Sony had a trilogy of Spider-Man films planned before the third film was officially confirmed when he was doing press for Spiderman: Homecoming. The actor also spoiled the ending of Avengers: Infinity War to a theatre full of people who were about to watch the film. His slips have since become a running gag within Marvel Studios.
7 Rachel McAdams
In 2009 when Rachel McAdams was doing press on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart for her film The Time Travelers Wife, she accidentally revealed the plot for the entire movie.
The actress managed to give away the entire plotline within the first few minutes of the interview. She realized what she was doing, but it seems she could not help herself.
6 Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone was so excited to reprise his role as Rocky in the 2015 film Creed he decided to take a picture of him screenwriting and sharing it on social media. Unfortunately, the picture included the screenplay for Creed, revealing a scene near the end of the story. By zooming in, one could read and discover that Rocky Balboa would be diagnosed with cancer near the end of the film.
5 Samuel L. Jackson
During an interview with Now Magazine, Samuel L. Jackson was asked what his character, Mace Windu, would be up to in the new Star Wars film. He revealed that his character would die, not realizing this may be a spoiler. Fans already knew Episode III wasn't going to end great for Jackson's character, but it's safe to say George Lucas would have preferred if he didn't give away a major plotline.
4 Hugh Jackman
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2017, Hugh Jackman spoke about a conversation he had with comedian Jerry Seinfeld about knowing when to call it quits in
the business. He said something cryptic a feeling about where Logan might end up and revealed he liked the idea that his character was going to "give his life to save someone else." Jackman basically revealed the fate of his character in the film.
3 Jiang Wen
Jiang Wen spoiled a major plotline in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that did not even involve his character, Baze Malbus, during a panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe. Wen revealed Chirrut Imwe would die at some point during the film. However, he did not see it as a big deal seeing as almost everyone died by the end of the film.
2 Jason Momoa
Jason Mamoa spoiled a significant plot in the movie Aquaman during an interview. He confessed that Arthur Curry would be crowned King of Atlantis at the end of Aquaman during a press junket at the San Diego Comic-con. The actor said, "I think when he was a little boy, he had these powers and he didn't hone them in so this [was the] whole journey of him going to become the king."
1 Anne Hathaway
During an interview with David Lettman on his former late-night show, Anne Hathaway accidentally spoiled the ending of The Dark Knight Rises when she reacted to Letterman's assumption that Batman would die. The late-night host said, "But in the end, Batman is dead." She replied, "Dave," with a sign.
