There truly is not an actor in the world like Tom Cruise. Sure, some fans might have complaints about his career, however, when it comes to stunts, nobody comes close to his daredevil ways.

Heck, this is the same guy that once landed a plane in a random person's backyard.

Along the way, he has pushed the envelope. Given his older age, we're hoping those crazy moments are in the past. Throughout the article, we'll take a look at some of the stunts that made us hold our breath and in one instance, that's literally what he did...

We'll look back at Tom's 'Mission Impossible' stunt that featured the actor holding his breath underwater for more than six minutes.

The real kicker, the scene was all shot in one take.

Tom Cruise's Adventurous Side Started At A Young Age

Tom Cruise did not have the most conventional days as an adolescent. According to his words alongside Interview Magazine, he bounced all over the place during his youth. He didn't have many friends and keeping a consistent line of work was quite the task in itself.

"I was very frustrated. I didn’t have a lot of friends. The closest people around me were my family. I think they felt a little nervous about me because I had a lot of energy and I couldn’t stick to one thing."

"If I worked in an ice-cream store – and I’ve worked in a lot of them – I would be the best for two weeks. Then I was always quitting or getting fired, because I was bored. I feel good about the fact that I finally found something I love. I never lived in one place for very long – that’s the way my whole life has been. I was always packing and moving around, staying in Canada, Kentucky, Jersey, St. Louis – it all helped because I was always learning new accents, experiencing different environments."

That type of energy would eventually translate to the big screen, as Cruise became a huge star. Though as we all know by now, he's quite intense on the set, and that includes his crazy stunts.

Tom Cruise Held His Breath Underwater For Six-Minutes Plus In 'Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation'

Normal actors in Hollywood would take separate sequences to film such a scene... but yea, Tom Cruise isn't a normal actor. He wanted to shoot the scene in one shot, and the real kicker here, the scene was over six minutes. That's longer than most attention spans to be quite frank.

Alongside People, Cruise discussed the experience, "It’s something I have always wanted to do. Director Christopher McQuarrie and I have been thinking about it since working on Edge of Tomorrow. I have done a lot of underwater sequences. But we wanted to create a suspense underwater sequence without cuts. So doing that sequence was really interesting. We’re underwater and we’re doing breath-holds of 6 to 6 1/2 minutes. So I was doing all my training with the other stuff (on-set). It was very taxing stuff.”

Taxing might be an understatement, most humans can't even hold their breath for longer than 30-seconds, never mind doing so for over six minutes.

In truth, this was just one of the many stunts that Cruise would partake in throughout his wild career.

Tom Cruise Is Know For Going Overboard With His Stunts

Ah yes, where to begin with dangerous Tom Cruise stunts, that might've been worse than holding his breath underwater for six minutes... we can start with the time he was hanging off a plane, while the plane was in motion.

Typical Tom, his only concern during the scene was making sure his body was positioned properly for the cameras... not his actual well-being.

''I remember one time we were going down the runway and there was just a little particle that just hit me, it was smaller than a fingernail. I was thankful it didn’t hit my hands or face, if it did I’d have a problem because those parts were exposed, but it still could have broken my ribs!”

Swordplay while on a horse, climbing the world's tallest building, riding with bulls on a motorcycle along with so many more are other times Cruise pushed boundaries to levels unheard of.

Sure, his opinions might be a little out there at times, but there truly is no denying his commitment to making a particular scene great, no matter how trying it might be.
