What Was It Like For Jennifer Connelly Working Alongside Tom Cruise In Top Gun: Maverick?

Appearing in any film is quite the task and commitment, however, when appearing alongside Tom Cruise, things are pushed to the next level. The actor is intense when it comes to his films, particularly the stunt work.

Connelly had never worked with Cruise nor had she met him, the actress stated alongside Men's Journal that she really didn't know what to expect. Ultimately, she was blown away by his enthusiasm and involvement during the film.

"I’ve never come across anyone with that degree of enthusiasm for every single shot. Tom puts everything he has into everything that he does. For instance, we have a sequence on a boat. Tom looked at it and said, “This just isn’t cool enough. How can we make it more exciting for audiences?” We did the shot again with a faster boat in stronger wind. Now you see it and—it’s intense. We’re soaring across the sea."

Jennifer Connelly Driving The Sailboat Was Too Safe For Tom Cruise's Liking

Connelly knew she wasn't taking on just any film. The actress actually had to take sailing lessons for the fantastic sailing scenes involved in the film.

"I did. I took sailing lessons, which was really fun and sometimes terrifying, because I live in New York City. I was taking lessons in New York Harbor, which is really insane. There's so many ferries and police boats and, believe it or not, kayakers and jet skiers in New York Harbor. Who knew? There's a lot of traffic, so that was pretty funny," she told Looper.

As if taking the lessons wasn't enough, Jennifer revealed alongside Stephen Colbert that the circumstances of her sailing scene were too safe for Cruise's liking. Therefore, they needed to reshoot the scene at a different location.

"We filmed that sequence twice. We filmed the first time in San Diego, there were lovely shots, but Tom was like this isn't fast enough. So we redid the scene and went to San Francisco for the rough weather, for the wind, and that's what we have."

Connelly revealed that it was a stressful experience but something that she ultimately had a blast with.
