When Colin made an appearance on Dax Shepard and Monica Padman's fantastic podcast, Armchair Expert, he talked about his childhood. As Colin explained, he got to spend time in L.A. where his dad lived every other weekend, and during the summer in L.A. when he was a kid.

“It was just a fun sort of getaway. I went to summer camp, and we found stuff to do." Later during the same podcast appearance, Colin explained that Tom wasn't a single dad for long as Hanks “found the person [he] was meant to be with" and then Rita was around "pretty much right around the divorce".

During several of Colin's other media appearances, he has spoken about his dad and made Tom seem like a great guy. A perfect example of that is Colin has described the advice Tom has given him about being a dad and an actor.

As for Tom, he unsurprisingly speaks about Colin with a great deal of pride. On top of that, Tom has revealed some adorable stories about Colin. A perfect example of that is when Tom took part in Variety Studio: Actors on Actors series and described how Colin reacted to his dad appearing on Love Boat.

"My son Colin, he was only like 3 maybe, 3 or 4, and at the end of The Love Boat, it's sailing away and they show the closing credits and he started crying. And I said, 'Why are you crying?' He says, 'Cause you're going away on the Love Boat.' He thought I was on that boat, sailing away. It was really very sweet."

Why Colin Hanks' Childhood Wasn't What You Think It Was

During Tom Hanks' lengthy career, he has managed to win a long list of significant awards. While that is wonderful, you can't pay your bills with a trophy. With that in mind, it is also a good thing that many of Tom's movies made a lot of money at the box office.

During his aforementioned appearance on the podcast Armchair Expert, Colin spoke about his childhood and revealed that his mother often told him they couldn't afford things.

"I don't know how much money that my mom was getting in alimony, but what I heard was, 'We don't have the money for that. Your Dad has that. We don't have that.'"

While that remark implies that Colin had it pretty good when he got to spend time at his dad's, he clearly wasn't living like a rich kid the way a lot of people would assume a lot of the time.
