When we think of Disney, our brains automatically go to the heroes and heroines of the movies and shows that we love. Then, we probably think of the villains. After all, there wouldn’t be a movie if the protagonists didn’t have an antagonist to go up against. Next comes our hero’s sidekicks. The film could definitely exist without them, but they make everything more interesting, and they usually end up giving a helping hand. Finally, it’s the villain’s sidekick. These guys are essentially – and, sometimes, literally – the ugly stepchildren of Disney films. They’re rarely mentioned, and some of us can’t even remember their names. However, just because they don’t have the moral compass of our heroes or the significance of the villains, doesn’t mean that they should be forgotten. So, let’s take a moment to recognize these hardworking but under-appreciated characters!
10 The Hyenas
Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed are the names of the main hyenas from The Lion King. They rest at Scar’s right hand and are willing to do whatever it takes to make him king. The only thing about these three is that their actions are self-serving. Some of the other characters on this list follow the villain out of pure loyalty, but these guys do it because they get something tangible from it. If Scar is the leader then that means that they won’t have to go hungry again, and who wouldn’t want that!
The villain sidekick in Aladdin is a talking parrot named Iago. He may just be a bird, but he is super loyal to Jafar. He does everything that Jafar asks of him. Not only does he follow directions, but he has to put up with a lot. The last thing he wants to do is be around a Sultan who constantly feeds him crackers that he hates, but he does it because he’s faithful to his master. It must be a pain and half to have to act like he can’t talk whenever he’s out in the open, but he does it anyway because he’s dedicated to the Royal Vizier of Agrabah.
8 Dr. Facilier’s Shadow
At first glance, it may not seem like there’s a villain’s sidekick in The Princess and the Frog, but if you really think about it, you’ll realize that Facilier’s shadow serves that purpose. It may be only a shadow, but it’s not limited to the normal duties of one. It can leave Facilier when he sends it off on an errand, and it’s even able to take hold and grasps objects which came in handy multiple times during the movie. Even though this shadow was evil, we couldn’t help but think about how convenient it would be to have something like that by our side.
7 Flotsam And Jetsam
Ursula in The Little Mermaid would be nothing without Flotsam and Jetsam. Without these two eels, she wouldn’t be able to get any customers. She uses them not only to see the merfolk outside of her cave, but she also uses them to bring the unsuspecting victims back to her home so that she can trick them into signing over their life to her.
They’re also particularly smart. They don’t have to wait for instructions from the sea witch. Instead, they just go out and get things done. She didn’t have to tell them that they needed to keep Eric from kissing Ariel. They just made sure that they did whatever they needed to do to stop it from happening, and that’s the kind of proactive action that all employers seek in their employees.
6 Horace And Jasper
These two from 101 Dalmations are horrible for the fact that they would actually steal innocent puppies. You have to be pretty evil in order to do something that despicable. Dogs have got to be some of the purest animals to walk the face of the earth, but these two thieves couldn’t care less about that fact. They took them from their home knowing the fate that awaited those helpless creatures, which is exactly why their monstrous ways have landed them on this list!
Diablo of Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent is another one of Disney’s villainous sidekicks that was loyal to his master just for loyalty’s sake. He was the perfect assistant since he could be inconspicuous because he was just a bird. If one of Maleficent’s human henchmen had found Aurora then who knows how the movie might have turned out. If she saw suspicious looking humans, she might have run for the hills, but because a raven discovered her in the middle of a forest it didn’t look suspicious at all.
Kronk may be Yzma’s sidekick, but he isn’t very evil. Out of all of the Disney villains' sidekicks, he is the one with the largest moral compass. Usually, whenever Yzma asks him to do something bad, he takes the time to contemplate whether or not he should do this evil thing.
His role seems to be more of a quarter-life crisis. We know he’s in his twenties, so it’s very possible that he’s still trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life. This gig is just him trying his hand at something new until he happens to land the right job.
Even though LeFou of Beauty and the Beast looks like he isn’t the brightest bulb in the bunch, he actually is pretty smart. Gaston is the quintessential “dumb jock,” and LeFou is the nerdy guy that sticks around because he wants to be popular by association. It doesn’t seem like Gaston cares about his lackey even a little bit, but his right-hand man helps him out at multiple points in the film. If it wasn’t for him, the crowd might have never thought that Maurice should’ve been locked up and there may not have been anyone to lead the mob in the end.
2 Pain And Panic
Pain and Panic may have messed up royally by failing to make sure that Hercules drank all of the poison that Hades had for him, but they actually came in handy after that first slip up. Since they have the ability to shapeshift, they were able to trick the hero into fighting a monster that nearly killed him. They also made sure that Meg was doing what she was supposed to do by following her around in some of their non-threatening and discreet forms.
Lucifer is so simple in his villainous ways. He’s a cat, and he does what cats do best – chase after mice.
Cinderella has tons of mouse friends, and Lucifer makes it his job to attack all of them. He knows that if he succeeds then he’ll also succeed in making the girl unhappy, and this would make his owner happy. The kitty can’t talk or shapeshift like some of the other characters on this list, but he doesn’t let that stop him from being an effective sidekick.
