Now that NASA's Perseverance rover has landed on Mars, can we have our Martian back?

In 2015, the Academy Award-winning actor played Mark Watney in The Martian, an astronaut who finds himself stranded on Mars after his team assumes he is dead due to a severe storm. With a limited amount of supplies, Watney fights for his survival while his team at NASA work tirelessly to bring him home.

The Bourne Identity actor became the face of many memes shared by Netizens on Twitter. Fans got super creative and inquired why the actor hadn't been spotted on the red planet yet!

The Rescue Mission Begins...

Netizens joined in to continue the ongoing joke on Twitter, sharing that the anticipated rescue mission of Matt Damon had finally begun.

NASA's Perseverance rover shared its first photo from Mars after it safely landed on the planet on Feb 18, and users recognized that Matt was nowhere to be seen.

That changed when hundreds of fans joined in on the quickly escalating joke, sharing creative memes which explained that the Perseverance rover was actually a rescue mission for the actor's character from The Martian.

The edited photo that surfaced on the social media platform, sees the actor in his spacesuit from the movie, in full view. "Is that...Matt Damon?!?" @SaulBHP joked in a tweet.

Fark.com founder Drew Curtis shared, "The Federal Government continues to spend far too much money trying to rescue Matt Damon. He knew what he was getting into."

Texas Senator Ted Cruz's name was right up there with the actor, after users suggested the politician...had left for Mars. The United States senator left the state amid a serious power crisis on Wednesday, which led users to joke about the same.

"We've made history...now can we bring Matt Damon home & send Ted Cruz there, please?" wrote @EricHaftelLive.

Matt Damon's character in the film is rescued eventually, so we can understand why NASA is unable to locate him. That fact, however, made no different to the Internet. As always, they made the best out of any situation!
