Comedian Bill Maher is best known for his political talk show, Real Time with Bill Maher. Lately, though, his statements on the show have caused a huge reaction on Twitter, and it seems as though people are done with him.

Maher invited comedian Nikki Glaser to his show on Friday, and it wasn't long before the topic of cancel culture arose.

Cancel culture refers to the practice of withdrawing support for a celebrity or public figure by boycotting their shows, movies and products due to their controversial behaviors or statements - though it should be noted that this is a complex topic, and the definition of what it means to be "cancelled" varies from person to person.

Maher asked Glaser why she wasn't afraid of cancel culture, saying, "please don't apologize. Because there's too much apologizing in North America."

However, the younger comedian had the opposite stance on the matter. She insisted that she loves apologizing, but Maher was skeptical.

Glaser wasn't the only one that Maher felt the need to provide advice to. He also spoke of a similar rhetoric regarding Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Maher spoke with CNN's Paul Begala and Jane Coaston about the controversy surrounding Miranda's new film, In The Heights. The film, about the Washington Heights community in New York City, was criticized for its lack of diversity in the ranges of skin tones represented, and Miranda ended up issuing a public apology for it.

Maher told Miranda indirectly on his show: "Please stop apologizing!"

Twitter was not having any of it, though. Users called on Maher to stop telling others what to do.

Maher's controversial statements didn't end there, though. He also linked his comments about apologizing to the Democratic party, stating, "This [cancel culture] is why people hate Democrats," referring to liberal "bullies" on Twitter.

Twitter users were particularly outraged by this statement, which was a generalized portrayal of democrats, and highlighted Maher's own internal fear of being cancelled.

Another user, MethodMan008, also called him out: "That's why people hate democrats? Because Afrolatinos? Bill, you're old."

The comments referring to Maher's rants are specifically about his past statements calling democrats "hypersensitive" and that they "suck the fun out of everything."

Maher also stirred controversy over his statements regarding the use of masks during the pandemic. On his June 11th episode of Real Time, Maher stated:

“I see people on the street walking outside with a mask on, like you [expletive] moron! I just want to shout at them outside the car, you’re a moron! You never could get it outside, really, and you’re alone walking on the street with a mask?"

Many users responded with stories of their personal experiences to explain why they disagreed with Maher's statement.

Only time will whether or not Maher is truly being "cancelled" himself, or if this will die down. If he is, he will be joining a long list of celebrities who have been "cancelled" in 2021, including Chrissy Teigen and Piers Morgan.
