Chadwick Boseman fans have expressed their disappointment after acting legend Anthony Hopkins beat the late star to Oscar glory. Hopkins, 83, won the coveted gong for his role in The Father, becoming the oldest person ever to win an acting Oscar.

This marks the British icon's second Academy Award. He first won 29 years ago for his role as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of The Lambs.

Boseman - who died of colon cancer aged just 43 last August - was widely tipped to win a posthumous award for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

The Academy Awards usually ends with the Best Picture award being announced.

But this year it was decided that Best Actor would be the last award of the night. It was rumored that Boseman would be announced as the winner, and the awards show would end with a tribute to his life's work.

When that did not happen, Hopkin's win caused mass hysteria on social media. Dozens claimed the decision was "the worst TV ending since Game of Thrones."

Sir Anthony Hopkins did not attend the awards ceremony - which was held in Los Angeles' Union Station.

"They build the entire show around a Chadwick Boseman ending and then Anthony Hopkins won and didn't show up," one fan tweeted.

"Holy s*** Anthony Hopkins beating the late Chadwick Boseman AND Riz Ahmed AND Steven Yeun for Best Actor is just some go home with your heart in your belly stuff. What is even happening," a second added.

"Yeah the 'let’s put Best Actor' last so, obviously, we can celebrate the life of Chadwick Boseman” really backfired," a third chimed in.

Today, Hopkins posted a video on Instagram against a stunning Welsh backdrop and paid tribute to Boseman while thanking the Academy for his honor.

"I am very grateful to the Academy, and I want to say thank you. I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman who was taken from us far too early. And once again, thank you all. I really did not expect this. I feel very privileged and honoured. Thank you."
