When we think cutting-edge, Walmart is not the first name to come to mind. Yet the big box surprised fans and haters with an amazing new commercial that aired during the 76th annual Golden Globes. The ad for the store’s new grocery pickup app featured the most iconic cars in filmdom, including the Batmobile from Justice League, the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters, KITT from Knight Rider, the Mystery Machine from Scooby-Doo and the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future, to name just a few.
The commercial, created by Publicis Groupe’s Walmart-dedicated agency, Department W, also fittingly includes music from Gary Numan’s "Cars," a new wave hit that reached number one in 1979. According to Barbara Messing, Walmart's chief marketing officer, the company chose cars that would be familiar to viewers of all ages and worked with film studios to get access to the legendary vehicles. "This helped ensure the 'famous cars' looked just like what our customers knew from the films while demonstrating the ease, speed and convenience of the service – and that it’s for everyone, regardless of what car you drive," she added.
The ad innovatively incorporated snapshots of Scooby, who was anxious to pick up his Scooby Snacks, Slimer from Ghostbusters, who douses several Walmart employees in green goo, and the hyper-active Compies from The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Other cars featured in the commercial include Lightning McQueen from Cars, the Mutts Cutts dog van from Dumb and Dumber, the family station wagon from National Lampoon’s Vacation, the Ford Explorer from Jurassic Park, the Flintstones family car and Bumblebee from Transformers.
Walmart’s online grocery pickup is available at more than 2,000 stores nationwide. The service allows customers to order online and pick up at the store for free. After placing an order, the customer selects a pickup timeslot. In the meantime, Walmart employees will find the items and have them ready when the customer arrives. The groceries will be loaded into the customer’s car when they pull in. The service saves time and money since customers can make their selections online, take advantage of discounts and save on shipping costs. The curbside pickup service does, however, require a $30 minimum purchase.
