Eminem has always been tight-lipped about his personal life, despite having created an entire film about his younger years. So it's challenging to separate truth from rumor when looking for information about the rapper's previous relationships.

It's even harder to find information about Eminem and Brittany Murphy, because the two only worked together one time before Brittany's tragic passing in 2009.

So did the two ever really date, and was Brittany Murphy Eminem's girlfriend back in the day?

Did Eminem Hook Up With Brittany Murphy?

Stories from the cast's time on the set of '8 Mile' are pretty widely known, and the crew has explained that they all really bonded while developing the film. The cast got together to spend time off of the set and develop the friendships they needed to make the film feel authentic.

But Eminem, of course, would never admit to having had a personal relationship with Murphy beyond a friendship and mutual respect as artists. Though the actress did play his love interest, there was a full cast that was also involved in the project, and some fans may have even forgotten that Brittany was even in '8 Mile,' because the relationship wasn't the main plot point.

And Brittany also gave countless interviews about her creative endeavors, including the film with Marshall Mathers, and only had good things to say.

So the question becomes, did Brittany ever hint at having a not-so-platonic relationship with Eminem? It depends who fans ask.

Did Brittany Murphy Admit She Dated Eminem?

Some sources suggest that at one time, Brittany Murphy did admit to having a brief fling with Eminem.

Though she took a lot of seemingly good-natured ribbing after playing Eminem's on-screen love interest, Brittany doesn't seem to have claimed to have dated her co-star. At least, not in a recorded interview that's still around today.

As many times as she was asked about it, if Brittany really did hook up with the rapper, she clearly wasn't about to spill the beans. Still, she wasn't averse to joking about it when pestered in interviews.

In fact, in one interview, she used a line from another of her films ("I'll never tell") when asked whether she and Marshall Mathers became an "off-screen item."

Still, Murphy did gush about what a hard worker Mathers was, and how funny and honest he was. The interesting thing is that she made those remarks in an interview alongside Ashton Kutcher, for the film they began working on right after '8 Mile' wrapped.

In 'Just Married,' Murphy and Kutcher played spouses, and plenty of headlines advertised their romance afterward -- which means Brittany may have already been dating Ashton when people began poking around for information about Eminem.

How Did Eminem Feel When Brittany Murphy Died?

After Brittany Murphy passed away, interviewers often asked Eminem about his feelings on the matter. And in one interview, Eminem hinted that he and Brittany were, at the very least, good friends if not more.

Mathers talked about how "crazy" it was to hear Brittany had died, and elaborated that "at one point we were very close and she was a really good person."

But Eminem also took that opportunity to highlight that the biggest issue facing artists was overdose and addiction. He even pointed out that as famous people, he and Brittany, and countless others, could have not just someone on the street providing them illicit substances, but also a doctor in their back pocket if they wanted.

It's clear that Eminem cared about Brittany as both a human, former friend, and an artist, so her passing wasn't necessarily easy on him.

However, it doesn't sound like the two had a long-lived relationship, so it makes sense that if they ever did have more than a friendship between them, it likely wasn't very serious.

But back then, maybe Eminem's perspective on dating was different, and maybe he wasn't afraid of getting close to someone in the spotlight. After all, his relationship with his ex Kim created plenty of fodder for the rapper's albums, but it wasn't feel-good material by any means.

Who Is Eminem Dating Now?

It's clear that Eminem hasn't been celibate his entire time in Hollywood. But these days, Eminem chooses not to date for a specific reason, and it involves his privacy.

He's put a high priority on living life more or less under the radar, except for when he wants to be seen (or heard) when putting out new music or other projects. So no one knows for sure whether he's dating anyone, or if he's opting to stay single and focus on his craft.

After all, he's spent literal decades in the limelight, and he doesn't seem keen on having his spotlight fade out anytime soon.
