Set in London, the upcoming movie follows Stone as the aspiring fashion designer we’ve all come to know and hate in classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Pulling a British accent and donning some bold statement pieces, this young Cruella has a rebellious, punk attitude as she takes the city by storm in all-black, leather ensembles.

Another Stone’s character went for equally daring fashion choices — minus the skinning puppies for fur detail.

Prime Video Hints At Fashion Connection Between ‘Easy A’ And ‘Cruella’

In Easy A, The Favourite actress plays Olive, a teenager lying about having lost her virginity and subsequently slut-shamed by other students at her high school.

A playful, thought-provoking take on the novel The Scarlet Letter, the movie sees Olive embrace the identity others have created for her, a decision that also affects her wardrobe. At one point in the film, the character wears a black bustier with a red A sawn on one side.

“Easy A was the prequel for Cruella. Emma Stone you have 24 hours to respond,” Prime Video tweeted after the Cruella trailer was released.

The connection is definitely too vague, but it is undeniable that both characters have a well-defined fashion sense.

Will ‘Cruella’ Give A Redemption Arc To Disney’s Infamous Villain?

A darkly humorous tale focused on Cruella’s first steps in the fashion world, the movie has a few spectacular tricks up its sleeve. Namely, Stone entering a party in a white overcoat which she promptly sets on fire to reveal a stunning crimson gown.

A fan pointed out the similarities with another female-focused stand-alone villain movie, Birds of Prey, starring Margot Robbie. While Cruella seems as fun and consciously over-the-top as Cathy Yan’s take on Harley Quinn, it is unclear whether it will give a redemption arc to a villain whose dream is to wear canine fur.

Disney’s latest foray into rehabilitating its most despised villains follows the Maleficent movie series. In the 2014 film and its 2019 sequel, Angelina Jolie stars as the powerful witch who curses Princess Aurora in the original Disney movie Sleeping Beauty.

Cruella will be released on May 28, 2021
