Let's be honest, Hugh Grant's 2009 Elle Magazine interview is still newsworthy. Seldom are A-list actors that brutally honest.

Aside from being interviewed on The Howard Stern Show, there's no venue where a celebrity will be 100% honest in a manner that may make them look unsavory. Which, by-the-way, is just another word for "human".

Sure, places like 60 Minutes allow actors to show touching and vulnerable sides of their personalities. But sharing honest experiences and perspectives about co-workers... That's saved for a venue that encourages more than lip-service.

But Hugh Grant broke the mold with Elle Magazine. Although, he may have been a bit too honest with about his female co-stars as many now believe that he's nowhere near as charming as he is in the movies.

Granted, Hugh was asked to say three things about his co-stars. He didn't just freely volunteer this information. Still, The Four Weddings And A Funeral star's interview is just downright amazing...

His Perspectives Were Dissected On The Graham Norton Show

In April 2016, Hugh Grant joined his Florence Foster Jenkins co-star, the great Meryl Streep, on The Graham Norton Show. It was there where the British chat show host questioned Hugh about his Elle Magazine comments. In particular, Graham was curious about the quick sound bites he gave about his female co-stars.

"I think it was regrettable."

That was the first thing Hugh said about his shocking interview, but he played along as Graham went through the list of his co-stars.

Graham began with Hugh's Sense and Sensibility co-star, the legendary Emma Thompson. In the Elle interview, Hugh simply described her as "clever, funny, mad as a chair."

Hugh didn't seem to mind this analysis. He said to Graham, "that's true. You know Emma."

Graham agreed. "Well, quite a mad chair."

He then moved on to Hugh's Bridget Jones co-star, Renée Zellweger, who he said was, "Delightful. Also far from sane. Very good kisser."

Hugh also didn't have too much to disagree with here. "She is genuinely lovely, but her emails are 48 pages long. Can't understand a word of them. I'll put them on Twitter."

In a different interview with People Magazine, Hugh claimed that he and Renée truly love each other but that she's in "the same category as Emma Thompson, in terms of lunacy". He then went on to describe her as a brilliant and generous actor.

Graham continued with the rest of the Elle Magazine interview: "Sandra Bullock: A genius. A German. Too many dogs. Julianne Moore: Brilliant actress. Loathes me. Rachel Weisz: Clever. Beautiful. Despises me. Drew Barrymore: Made her cry. Stunning film-star face. Hates me."

Hugh nodded along with all of this, claiming that "Julianne definitely hates me. Rachel Weisz, I think we got on fine, but I don't know why I said that. Maybe I was going for a comedy triple I don't know..."

When Hugh came to what actually went down with Drew Barrymore, he claimed that she made the mistake of giving him acting notes...

This is when Hugh turned to Meryl Streep and asked, "how would you take that?"

Meryl Had A Snappy Answer For Hugh

When asked about how she would feel if another actor gave her notes, Meryl laughed and said, "Well, I took them very well, didn't I?"

Immediately, the entire Graham Norton Show audience picked up on the comeback and the energy on the couch shifted dramatically...

Either Meryl couldn't miss the chance at a joke, was telling the absolute truth about what it's like to work with Hugh, or wasn't having how he was speaking about her colleagues.

Regardless, Hugh appeared truly shocked... but Meryl simply grinned and said, "I'm kidding".

Meryl then went on to talk about how enjoyable it was to work with him. Hugh returned the compliments.

But Meryl isn't the only famous female who has enjoyed working with Hugh. During an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Andie MacDowell said, "I really can't think of a bad part about working with Hugh, he was adorable."

In the Elle interview, Hugh described Andie as a "Southern belle. Charming. Gorgeous."

The two worked together on Four Weddings and a Funeral before Hugh really became known as the ultimate romantic comedy movie star. Now he may just be one of the things we're tired of seeing in a romantic comedy.

The Elle Interview Targeted Others As Well

We have to be fair and say that Hugh didn't just speak about the women he shared the screen with, he was also equally candid about his male directors who can definitely go too far on movie sets.

And, again, Hugh didn't just open his mouth about all this... He was asked. Specifically, about acting advice the directors have him.

Hugh said that Love Actually director Richard Curtis told him to "be funnier". Ang Lee, who was struggling with English at the time, said, "do it like bad actor". And director Ken Russell screamed, "Forget how it f***ing feels, do it how I f***ing showed you, you c***."

At the end of the day, Hugh Grant was exceptionally honest about his time in the film industry. While this may have offended some people, it's frankly quite refreshing to hear a Hollywood type be honest for once.
