Kevin Costner is easily one of the biggest names in Hollywood, and rightfully so! The actor got his first big break back in 1981 in Malibu Hot Summer, later landing a role in the 1983 flick, The Big Chill, however the scenes Costner filmed for the movie were later cut out.

Despite the cinematic error, Kevin went on to become one of the 80s and 90s leading actors, landing roles in The Bodyguard, Dances With Wolves, and Field Of Dreams, to name a few. Throughout his many years of on-screen success, Kevin Costner has been able to share his biggest moments with his very blended family.

While his first marriage to Cindy Costner lasted an impressive 16 years, the duo split in 1994, marking the start of a not-so-great year for Kevin. In 1995, his blockbuster film Waterworld premiered, only to flop in the box office. Considering the hype surrounding the film at the time, it was evident that the film's failure could've easily ruined his career.

'Waterworld' Became A Total Flop

Waterworld first dropped back in 1995 and didn't perform nearly as well as it was expected to. Considering Kevin Costner was one of the biggest actors at the time, the film was meant to be a blockbuster success, however no such things happened. The film itself managed to cost quite a lot, so much that it ended up losing money, which is the first indicator pointing to it being a flop.

While it was originally meant to cost $65 million to produce, the film ended up costing an insane $175 million, with an added $60 million for marketing, making it a $235,000,000 film! In addition to it underperforming at the box office, making the film was also a disaster! Not only was Kevin Costner labelled a diva, but there were also many setbacks and issues with casting that certainly added to the film's disappointing performance.

As if the absurd cost wasn't enough, Kevin butted heads with the film's director and even requested that he be given computer-generated hair in post-production, considering the actor was showing signs of a thinning hairline at the time. While some fans claim his ongoing divorce left him in quite a negative mind frame, it's clear that it didn't do him any favors when filming.

Kevin Doesn't Regret The Film At All

Despite the film being a total flop, Kevin Costner stands firm on it being a classic! Say what? During an interview with The Huffington Post, Costner revealed that he doesn't regret doing the film one single bit, so much that he looks back at it fondly. "It stands up as a really exotic, cool movie. I mean, it was flawed — for sure. But, overall, it's a very inventive, cool movie. It's pretty robust," he told the publication.

Although the film could've easily ruined Kevin's career, he managed to redeem himself shortly after, appearing in the 1997 film, The Postman, which did much better than his previous film, Waterworld did. Additionally, the film might not have performed well at the box office, but it certainly has a lasting legacy as it has inspired theme park attractions at four different Universal Studios in Hollywood, Singapore, Beijing, and Japan.
