For some celebrities, appearing on 'The Voice' led to additional opportunities and, of course, greater fame. And for CeeLo Green, it seemed like being a judge (from seasons 1-3) might help maintain the trajectory he was on after 2010's "Forget You" scaled the charts.

Unfortunately for the genre-crossing star, it wasn't to be. Controversy followed his time on 'The Voice,' and the drama behind the scenes ultimately cost him that and many other opportunities.

As Nicki Swift recapped, the same year Green won a Grammy for "Forget You" (in 2011), he was also tapped for the upcoming season of 'The Voice.' CeeLo even sang "Imagine" -- a bit of an off-brand song for him -- for the New Year's Eve ball drop in Times Square that year.

It seemed like big things were ahead.

But then, in 2012, a woman accused CeeLo of some seriously bad behavior. She claimed that Green put illicit substances in her drink while they were out to dinner. Then, she said, she had no memory of what happened after -- yet she woke up naked in CeeLo's bed.

There wasn't enough evidence to charge him for anything more severe than "furnishing a controlled substance," says Nicki Swift, and that resulted in probation and community service.

Though fans can speculate all day about what really happened between CeeLo and the lady he took out to dinner, it was his reaction to the charges that had fans ditching him. While the case was going on, CeeLo tweeted some uncomfortable comments that read a lot like victim shaming.

He said things like people who have really been assaulted remember it, and that if someone's "passed out" then they're not "WITH" you consciously. That was enough to have fans calling for him being booted from the show, and that eventually happened in 2014.

However, CeeLo maintained that it was his choice to leave 'The Voice,' telling Us Weekly that "I think I ran my course there just naturally... Amicably, we parted ways... It really has everything to do with me having the leverage to go elsewhere and be a success as well."

But fans of 'The Voice' reacted negatively when 2018 rolled around and producers hinted at bringing CeeLo back as an adviser of sorts. A social media storm roiled, and CeeLo never returned to the stage. Meanwhile, fans are begging for the show to bring back former coaches like Usher.

Still, CeeLo's been busy; he was on TV a few times in minor roles and cameos (even though 'Hotel Transylvania' replaced him), competed on 'Lip Sync Battle,' was on the British 'The Masked Singer,' released an album in 2020 (CeeLo Green is Thomas Callaway), and partnered with a bunch of brands in endorsement deals.

It may not be the money Blake Shelton is making on 'The Voice,' but CeeLo's not doing too terrible for himself.
