Most movies you watch come from a book or are based on a true story. Some of them, like the upcoming movie, Borderlands, is based off of a video game of the same name.

The game is an action role-playing first-person shooter game franchise set in a space western science fantasy setting, which was created by Gearbox Software. There are four games in total.

However, the film is set on the abandoned fictional planet of Pandora, where people search for a mysterious relic.

Borderlands stars Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis and other A-list actors. Curtis is a fighting game enthusiast, so she was excited to give fans the first look of the film on her Instagram. She only posted silhouettes of the characters and a brief description on her Instagram, so as to not get in trouble by the studio.

8 Set To Come Out In 2022

The movie is currently being filmed in Budapest, Hungary and is set to come out in 2022. No tentative date has been set yet. It was first announced in August 2015, with Lionsgate developing the project with Ari and Avi Arad of Arad Productions producing. Most of the cast was picked and announced in 2020. Hungary was one of the first places to introduce COVID-19 protections like the tiers of "bubbles" that separate the crew and mandatory testing. Other movies that were filming before the pandemic were able to resume there.

7 The Film Is Directed By Eli Roth

Eli Roth is a director, editor, producer, writer, and actor. He is best known for directing and producing horror films, but has taken on other roles as well. Roth first came to prominence for directing the films Cabin Fever and Hostel.

The screenplay is written by Aaron Berg and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl). For those worried about the film not capturing the unique essence of the games, don't worry. Gearbox founder, Randy Pitchford is executive producing the film.

6 The Characters Are The Same But It's Not The Same Concept

Do not expect to go in to the film and have it be just like the game. It has an entirely different plot, but has the same characters. While the video game is more of a role-playing shooter game, the film finds the characters on an adventure alongside a group of thieves racing against the evil Atlas Corporation as they hunt down an extremely valuable alien vault. However, all of the characters that gamers know and love will be making an appearance.

5 It Is Filled With A Major Line-Up Of Stars

Some of the biggest names in Hollywood are set to star in the film and they are excited for it. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Tannis. Cate Blanchett plays Lilith. Kevin Hart is Roland. Jack Black is Claptrap. Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina. Florian Munteanu as Krieg. To round out the supporting cast is Janina Gavankar as Commander Knoxx, Edgar Ramirez as Atlas, Olivier Richters as Krom, Benjamin Byron Davis as Marcus, Charles Babalola as Hammerlock, Cheyenne Jackson as Jakobs, Gina Gershon as Moxxi, Steven Boyer as Scooter, Ryann Redmond as Ellie, and Haley Bennett in the role of an original character. Penn Jillette is even going to make a small cameo, who voiced a character in the video game.

4 It Is A Different Role For Kevin Hart

There were months of negotiations, but Kevin Hart was finally cast to play Roland, from the soldier class. According to the Borderlands Wiki, he is originally from the planet Promethea and is a former soldier of the Crimson Lance, the highly trained private military of the Atlas corporation. The character is proficient with all weapons, although he prefers shotguns and combat rifles. Roland can deploy a Scorpio Turret that can be upgraded throughout the game. Hart is usually one to play comedic roles, while this will be a more serious role for him.

3 This Isn't The First Movie Based Off Of A Video Game

Most of the time, movies are based off of books, but sometimes, and more than you'd think, a movie is based off a video game. And this is the case for Borderlands. Most of the time those movies aren't 100 percent like the game, because it is kind of hard to do that but the concept is still there. Some other video-game turned movies films are Sonic The Hedgehog, Mortal Kombat, Lara Kroft: Tomb Raider, and Assassin's Creed.

2 It's Going To Be A 'Jumanji' Reunion

Kevin Hart and Jack Black working together again. Although technically, Black does just a voice role, but the comedic duo is still back together working again, like they they did on Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. And just like Jumanji, Borderlands is a film based off a video game/board game. Jack Black's character Claptrap is a CL4P-TP general purpose robot manufactured by Hyperion and has been programmed with an overenthusiastic personality. It brags frequently, yet also expresses severe loneliness and cowardice.

1 Not To Be Confused With The 2007 Movie, 'Borderland'

Borderland is a American-Mexican horror film written and directed by Zev Berman. It is very loosely based on the true story of  Adolfo de Jesús Constanzo, a drug lord and the leader of a religious cult that practiced human sacrifice, according to Wikipedia. This movie would be better for Roth, because horror films are right up his alley, but he is sure to do a great job on Borderlands.
