In an ideal world, everyone would be born into a loving family and remain close with their relatives throughout their lives. In reality, however, family feud is not just the name of a game show, as there are a lot of people in the world who do not get along with the people they are related to. On the bright side, people are not stuck with those that they are related to at birth, and everyone can form a family of their own choosing.
Sadly, when someone feels betrayed by any of their relatives, that relationship can sever them forever. For example, it seems likely that many of the stars who do not get along with their parents will never be able to mend those relationships. With that in mind, it is amazing to learn that at one time things were so tense between Eric and Julia Roberts that Julia tried to take his daughter away from him.
Updated on March 23, 2023: Eric Roberts set the record straight in an interview last year on his current relationship with his sister, Julia. Us Weekly reported Eric as saying, "Suddenly … I keep hearing about [these issues] I have with my sister that I don’t [actually] have with my sister. They’re just popping up all over the place, and I’m asked about them as if they’re real issues. [I’d say,] 'Oh, I wasn’t aware of that.' … [It] blew up and blew up and became all these things it wasn’t and [there was gossip that] we don’t agree on a lot of things."
He went on to say, "My sister and I, though, we’ve always talked, we’ve always b*tched. I’ve always had fun, [we’ve always] known each other. Simple as that." It seems as though all the turmoil has been left in the past, and the siblings are moving forward together in love and forgiveness.
Why Did Julia Roberts Try To Take Emma Roberts Away From Her Father?
Throughout her career, Julia Roberts has starred in a slew of extremely successful movies. Of course, it should go without saying that typically when a movie succeeds at the box office, there are a lot of reasons behind it. When it comes to Julia’s filmography, however, it is abundantly clear that her movies were box office behemoths due to the adoration she receives from fans.
Considering that Julia Roberts and her peers are professional actors, it should go without saying that they do not necessarily have much in common with their best-known characters. Despite that, a lot of Julia’s fans think that she truly is America’s sweetheart. Because of that, it is likely to come as a shock to her fans that Julia’s private life has been highly dramatic at times. For example, there has been some notable drama between Julia and her husband’s ex-wife.
From the outside looking in, it seems like siblings Julia and Eric Roberts should have always gotten along, since they are both famous actors who likely have a lot in common. Unfortunately, however, Julia and Eric Roberts got into a fight that would make most sibling disagreements look like child’s play.
In 1991, Eric Roberts and his live-in girlfriend at the time, Kelly Cunningham, welcomed their daughter Emma Roberts into the world. Shortly thereafter, the couple decided to go their separate ways, which resulted in Eric and Kelly getting involved in an ugly custody battle. Shockingly enough, instead of having her brother’s back during the resulting court battle, Julia paid for the lawyers who fought in court to take Emma away from Eric.
In 2018, Eric Roberts spoke to Vanity Fair about his life and, during that interview, he was honest about his past illegal substance dependency issues. While discussing that part of his life, Eric revealed his addiction issue is why he was estranged from his sister Julia Roberts at the time she fought to take his daughter Emma Roberts away from him.
“The hardest person to protect yourself from is yourself. I was exhausting to be around. Complainy, blamey, unable to enjoy enjoyment. Everyone in my world needed a break sometimes, and that must have included Julia.” While Eric did not directly state that Julia Roberts fought against him during the custody battle due to his addiction issues, that seems extremely clear.
Julia Roberts And Eric Roberts Managed To Mend Fences
For the majority of parents, there is nothing they fear more than the idea of being separated from their children. As a result, since Julia Roberts paid for lawyers that fought to take Eric Roberts’ daughter Emma Roberts away from him, it certainly seemed like they would never be close again. As it turns out, however, Eric had revealed that after Julia gave birth to twins, the two siblings managed to make peace against all the odds.
As Eric Roberts explained during the aforementioned Vanity Fair interview, when Julia Roberts gave birth to her twins, he went to the hospital "to drop off gifts." Even though Julia and Eric had been estranged for years at that point, he was welcomed into Julia’s hospital room and the siblings managed to make peace. "Instead I was ushered into their room and was immediately awash in brotherly and uncle-ly love."
According to Eric Roberts, he has been on good terms with his sister Julia Roberts ever since her twins were born. In fact, even though Julia reportedly fought to keep Emma away from him at one point, he has said that he loves seeing his sister spend time with his daughter now.
