Can we listen to "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen without picturing Wayne and Garth rocking out to it in the back seat? We think not.

A lot of SNL stars tend to get really big roles outside the late-night comedy show, but Wayne's World was on a different level than all the rest. When it came out in 1992, it joined ranks with some of the best films helmed by SNL cast members, like Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, and The Blues Brothers.

Mike Myers and Dana Carvey's film started off as an SNL sketch but the film quickly turned into a cult classic. So if it was so popular, what happened to Carvey after playing Garth? Mike Myers has had a successful career since, with films like Shrek and Inglorious Bastards. Where has Carvey been? He's not the first SNL star to virtually disappear.

The two comedians are set to reprise their Wayne's World characters for a special Super Bowl commercial this year, but here's what Carvey's been doing up until that. Party on, Garth!

Carvey Left 'SNL' The Same Year 'Wayne's World 2' Came Out

Carvey was part of the SNL cast from 1986 to 1993. He entered the show with other comedians like Phil Hartman and helped transform it back into its former glory after viewership had been declining.

Carvey's character, the Church Lady, was especially popular as were his other characters such as Hans from the Hans and Franz sketch, The Grumpy Old Man, and his impersonations of George H. W. Bush, and Ross Perot. And we can't forget his song, "Choppin Broccoli."

Then there was Garth, who was actually based on Carvey's brother. He first played the character in 1989 in a sketch that was later adapted for the film. But Carvey actually almost dropped out of the film because Myers kept taking out his contributions to the script.

"Mike was writing it, and I was putting stuff in," Carvey told Howard Stern. "Then I would see that the stuff wasn’t in anymore. And so I actually, three weeks before we started shooting, said ‘thanks, but no thanks.’ I actually quit the movie."

For unknown reasons, Carvey proceeded with the film and it turned out to be a massive success. In 1993, the sequel was released but did not perform as well as the first.

Carvey won his first Primetime Emmy for his time on SNL that same year, after being nominated five other times. That also ended up being Carvey's last year on SNL.

Cavey had other issues with Myers. He claims that Myers stole his Dr. Evil impression and used it in Austin Powers, but Carvey has since let the feud go. We don't know whether his feud with Myers was the cause of him leaving SNL, but it probably had some effect on him.

He Left Hollywood To Raise His Kids And Recover From Health Problems

After leaving SNL, Carvey starred in a couple of films he calls awful, including Clean Slate, The Road to Wellville, Trapped in Paradise, as well as his own show, The Dana Carvey Show. After doing these films, Carvey decided to step away from Hollywood altogether to raise his two boys, Dex and Thomas.

"I have friends who get stressed about fading or not being as hot. I never quite engaged that," Carvey told People in 2019. "I have a lot of drive to try to be the best I can be, have people be blown away by what I do and repeating it. But the other side of me is fine wherever I am.

"My wife and I made two humans, so I thought I probably should make some adjustments based on the two humans being there." Carvey did bring them to set often, but he soon found out looking after two kids were a handful when you're trying to make a movie.

The fact that Carvey's health had declined in the late '90s was also a significant contribution to his time off. He had four unsuccessful angioplasties and underwent a double bypass. After finding out that the doctors had operated on the wrong artery, Carvey had to have the surgery again. This time it was successful and Carvey sued his doctor.

He Mainly Does Voice Work And Has Returned To Stand-Up

In 2002 he was back with films like The Master of Disguise, but then we didn't hear from him again until 2010. He tried to make another sketch comedy show called Spoof but it never got aired, so he moved to voice acting.

He's voiced for shows like The Fairly Odd Parents, Ricky and MortyHotel Transylvania 2, and The Secret Life of Pets along with its sequel.

"It’s fun to be in a really good animated film franchise that has its own personality," Carvey said about voicing the latter film. "I turned down Madagascar and I turned down Ratatouille. I was very, very busy raising kids at that time."

More recently, he's worked on a project with his grown sons, and has returned to stand-up and working on podcasts. "I don’t need to chase it. I’m taking it as it comes and enjoying it."

He reunited with Myers at SNL's 40th Anniversary in 2015 and again at the Oscars in 2019, but now they are reprising their Wayne's World characters for a teaser commercial for the Super Bowl. The Uber Eats ad debuted during the latest SNL episode and teased more content that will appear during the game. It isn't really the reunion we hoped for, but we take what we can get. It's just good to see Carvey again.

For Carvey, playing Garth was like getting a new pair of underwear, "at first they're restrictive but then after a while, they become a part of you."
