As far as anyone is concerned, Charlize Theron is one actress who has been everywhere and done everything. Having made her onscreen debut back in the late 90s, she quickly went from a relative unknown to a Hollywood star after winning an Oscar for her performance in the 2003 drama Monster.

Since then, the actress has gone on to become an A-lister (although Theron doesn’t believe she’s totally famous), starring in several blockbusters, including some for the Fast and Furious franchise. Behind the scenes, however, things don’t always go smoothly.

Charlize Theron Says There’s Always ‘A Version’ Of Tension Happening Behind The Scenes

Having taken on so many projects throughout her illustrious career, tensions are nothing new to Theron. If anything, they’re a normal part of work. “Every movie I’ve ever done, there’s been a version of that,” the actress recently acknowledged.

At the same time, Theron also made it clear that tensions onset don’t necessarily to a full-blown feud. “I guarantee you that if you ask anybody that [has played a meaningful role] in my career, they’d say, 'Oh, I’ve definitely been in a situation with Charlize where she’s called me two weeks later and said, 'You’re right, and I’m totally wrong,’” she continued.

That said, there have been moments when Theron did get upset while on set. It’s even led to an incident in one of her Oscar-winning films.

The Situation Went ‘Kind Of Out Of Hand’ In Mad Max: Fury Road

Years after winning her Oscar, Theron was cast to play Furiosa in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road opposite Tom Hardy. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the film tells the story of a warrior (Theron) who allies with a former captive (Hardy) as they try to outrun a tyrannical warrior and his henchmen while being pursued across the Wasteland.

And while they’re supposed to be on the same side onscreen, Hardy and Theron were complete opposites behind the scenes. That led to some tension, which was evident even before the cameras started rolling.

“It seemed to implode in preproduction. We weren’t even shooting and there seemed to be this animosity,” first assistant director P.J. Voeten recalled in the oral history Blood, Sweat, and Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road (an excerpt of which was published by Vanity Fair).

At the same time, Miller himself noted that the two stars seemed to have internalized the film’s story early on. “The story is all about self-preservation: If it’s an advantage to you to kill another character, then you should do it, and you don’t think twice about it,” the director explained. “I think that crept into the actors.”

And once Theron and Hardy got to set, a full-blown feud ensued. It essentially broke out after Theron called her co-star out for failing to show up to set on time.

“I remember vividly the day. The call on set was eight o’clock,” camera operator Mark Goellnicht said.

“Charlize got there right at eight o’clock, sat in the War Rig, knowing that Tom’s never going to be there at eight even though they made a special request for him to be there on time. He was notorious for never being on time in the morning. If the call time was in the morning, forget it—he didn’t show up.”

Hardy eventually showed up to set, but by then, he was three hours late and Theron has had it.

“She jumps out of the War Rig, and she starts swearing her head off at him, saying, ‘Fine the f****** c*** a hundred thousand dollars for every minute that he’s held up this crew,’ and ‘How disrespectful you are!’” Goellnicht recalled.

“She was right. Full rant. She screams it out. It’s so loud, it’s so windy—he might’ve heard some of it, but he charged up to her up and went, ‘What did you say to me?’”

Following the incident, Theron asked for producer Denise Di Novi to be present on set. “There was a sense that maybe sending a woman producer down could maybe equalize some of it, because I didn’t feel safe,” the actress explained.

Eventually, Hardy owned up to his faults. “In hindsight, I was in over my head in many ways. The pressure on both of us was overwhelming at times. What she needed was a better, perhaps more experienced partner in me,” the actor said.

“That’s something that can’t be faked. I’d like to think that now that I’m older and uglier, I could rise to that occasion.”

And even while they were still working on the movie, the situation between the two stars already began to improve.

“That scene where you see Tom with Charlize on the bike and all the Vuvalini and the Wives behind, intermingled—that scene was probably the biggest change in seeing Tom really soften to Charlize in real life,” Goellnicht recalled.

“He was a different person by the end—a lot easier to deal with, a lot more cooperative, more compassionate.”

Today, Theron is doing just fine. And while there may be tensions on movie sets, the actress has made some longtime friends too. Among them is former co-star Seth Rogen who recently convinced Theron to appear in The Boys.

“I will lay my body over broken glass for that guy…” she even said of him.
