Celebrity cheating scandals have been around since time immemorial. We’re sure that the ancient Greeks even had some kind of version of the paparazzi in order to capture emperors and empresses at their worst. Okay, we can’t prove that ancient history fact. But one ancient history fact we can prove?

For Jude Law and Sienna Miller, the paparazzi were around, and they contributed to the pain that was felt by Miller at the time of their relationship's demise. There are many photos and stories of that time that they had together, but even more of the time they had apart. It’s no surprise that the two of them don’t speak often now, just judging by how painful it was. We’re sure Jude Law felt bad, but Sienna Miller was the half of the relationship that truly got the short end of the stick.

Stuck with a city she couldn’t leave, the biggest role in her life, the biggest heartbreak of her life, and public humiliation is not an easy thing to get over. Public breakups are hard, and the sting can last for years after. It’s been a while since the event, though, and both have found themselves with new significant others. Has she finally turned the page in her book on Law, or is she still feeling a little locked up?

It Stung Hard

Miller was taken totally off-kilter by the situation. "It was really hard. That was one of the most challenging moments I hope I’ll ever have to experience. Because with that level of public heartbreak, to have to get out of a bed let alone stand in front of 800 people every night, it’s just the last thing you want to do."

And that’s just at work. Going and being a vulnerable actor with heartbreak is one of the hardest things in the world. The second hardest is being a vulnerable actor with a heartbreak and legions of paparazzi following you around and trying to capture your every tear. She explains that, “it was at the height of all that paparazzi madness, and in London where there was an epidemic of bad behavior. They knew where I would be every night,” which meant that coming and going from her play was all of a sudden fraught with celebrity paparazzi that wouldn’t normally have been there. That’s a kind of stress that just doesn’t give anybody any kind of relief. You’re literally always on guard. That’s no way to do a show!

The on-guard-ness is justified, though. We hope none of you have ever had to deal with cheating or a broken engagement, but knowing how our history looks, it’s likely most people have experience with one (or both) things. Miller and Law certainly experienced both, which can be a heavyweight to carry forward in life. “Miller met Law, 47, in late 2003 on the set of Alfie. After nearly a year of dating, they got engaged on Christmas Day 2004. However, Miller broke off the engagement after news of Law’s affair with his children’s nanny, Daisy Wright, went public the following year. Miller and Law separated in November 2006, but reunited in the fall of 2009 and dated for over a year before splitting up again in February 2011.” Surprise, surprise, but they didn’t try dating again after that.

She Carried On Despite It All

It’s true that she had a hard time dealing with the broken engagement, but she also seems to be over the event in question. "There’s a whole six weeks of that experience that I don’t remember. I have no recollection of it...People who came to see me said we had dinner, and I don’t remember. I was in so much shock over it all. And I’d really just begun. I was only 23. But if you get through that, you feel like you can get through anything,” which is the energy she’s brought into all of her reflections of the event. Apparently, they’re friendly, but wouldn’t go so far as to call themselves friends with each other. Jude Law has been married a few other times, while Miller has never managed to actually tie the knot. She’s had a variety of successful relationships over the years though and doesn’t consider herself lacking in the love department. And her family has grown, with her daughter truly being the highlight of her life.

While Sienna Miller and Jude Law aren’t the best friends in the world, they are cordial. And luckily the paparazzi’s attention span is short enough that Miller has never had to deal with them to that degree since. Both of them are happy in their current relationships, and seem to have recovered from the heartbreak; Miller has retained her success and was made all the stronger by dealing with the demons of Hollywood romance right away.
