In this day and age, there are many celebrities whose love lives seemed to be covered in the press on a weekly or even daily basis. For example, anytime a member of the Kardashian/Jenner family is rumored to be involved with someone new, it seems like everyone in the press comes together to breathlessly cover all the details.

On the other end of the spectrum, there also are a select few celebrities who seemingly have the ability to avoid the press at every turn. For example, there even are some extremely famous people who managed to get married and keep that a secret, at least for a while.

Throughout most of the time that Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria have been in the public eye, they have mostly managed to keep the press at bay. However, when they got married and then split up before too long, they briefly found themselves in the tabloid’s crosshairs. Despite all of the pressure Azaria and Hunt got from the press at that time, media circuses often don’t get to the bottom of the story they are covering. However, in the years since all of the attention subsided, more information has come out about what really went on in Hunt and Azaria’s relationship.

Becoming A Couple

During the 80s and early-90s, Helen Hunt was romantically linked to a couple of people who were big stars at that time, Matthew Broderick and Eric Stoltz. However, neither of those relationships lasted very long. For his part, Hank Azaria is known to have dated the actor Julie Warner during the early-90s.

Since all of those relationships failed before too long, Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria were both single when they met during the mid-90s. After falling in love, Azaria and Hunt began dating and they continued to do so for roughly five years.

How Things Fell Apart

After dating for several years, Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria walked down the aisle together in 1999. Considering they had been together so long before they tied the knot, most people assumed that Azaria and Hunt would remain married for a long time. Sadly after only seventeen months of marriage, Hunt filed for divorce with reports saying the couple had already been separated for six months.

After it was announced that Hank Azaria and Helen Hunt were getting divorced, her publicist released a statement saying “it’s a decision they came to together”. While there is a decent chance that there was a lot of truth to that statement, everyone knows that in almost every case, one person in a relationship is the one who initiated a split.

Of course, there is no what led to the conversations in which Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria decided to split and then divorce or who initiated them. However, during a 2017 “Radio Andy” interview, Azaria admitted that he couldn’t help but feel jealous of the success that Hunt enjoyed during their marriage. Worse yet, Azaria was willing to admit that his jealously made things difficult for the couple. “It makes the degree of difficulty in the relationship, and in your own career go way up.”

The Aftermath

During a 2013 Larry King interview, Hank Azaria was asked about how it felt to have his divorce covered by the press. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t think it was an enjoyable experience. “It was annoying as hell. I mean, you know, I guess, relatively, as celebrity divorces go, it wasn’t too bad. But yeah, you know, it’s one of the saddest times of your life and it’s, some of it anyway, being enacted on, in magazines and on TV.” Since Helen Hunt likes to keep her private life to herself, she hasn’t spoken about her divorce in public but it seems very safe to say she feels the same way.

On the bright side, Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria both were able to move on in the years that followed. In the case of Hunt, she began a relationship with a film producer, writer, and director named Matthew Carnahan in 2001 and they had a daughter in 2004 before their 2017 split. It would take Azaria longer to move on to a serious relationship. That said, in 2007 he married a former actor named Katie Wright, they welcomed their son into the world in 2009, and they remain together to this day.

According to what Hank Azaria told Larry King when he was asked if he is friends with Helen Hunt during the aforementioned 2013 interview, they still share a bond. That said, unlike some celebrity exes, they aren’t best friends. “Sure, we’re friendly, you know, we’re not like over to the other’s house.”
