Joey Potter and Dawson Leery totally belong together. Wait... but so do Joey and Pacey Witter. Fans of the popular '90s teen drama Dawson's Creek know how stressful it can be to watch this show's main love triangle develop and wonder who Joey should give her heart to. While Joey and Dawson are definitely soulmates, how can Joey not fall in love with the adorable Pacey who makes her laugh and encourages her to leave her comfort zone behind?

Fans say that Jen was actually the original star of Dawson's Creek, which is interesting to hear. If that was the case, would Joey and Pacey's relationship play out the way that it did? Many fans can't imagine this show without this major love story. And as it turns out, the actors who played these beloved characters actually dated IRL. Keep reading to find out the truth about Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson's relationship.

Joshua And Katie

Selma Blair could have been cast as Joey, but if that had happened, then maybe Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson would never have met and began dating.

Katie Holmes was on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1998, and according to Us Weekly, she shared a lot about her romance with her co-star. She didn't call out Joshua Jackson by name, but people knew that's who she was talking about.

Katie explained, "I feel so fortunate because he's now one of my best friends. It's weird, it's almost like a Dawson-and-Joey type thing now. He's been in the business so long, and he's really helped me. I respect him as a friend and as a professional."

The actress also said, "I had really good luck this past year and I had a really wonderful, amazing experience.

I'm just going to say that I met somebody last year, I fell in love, I had my first love, and it was something so incredible and indescribable."

Fans of Joey and Pacey are definitely swooning while hearing about this real life love story. While the characters seem to hate each other at first, as Pacey's goofy nature really bugs Joey and Pacey thinks that Joey is too uptight, it's super sweet to watch them fall for each other.

While Katie Holmes didn't tell Rolling Stone the reason why she and Joshua Jackson went their separate ways, perhaps they were too young to continue their relationship and it just didn't work out.

It's amazing to look back on Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson's relationship since their lives have taken them in such interesting places ever since. Of course, everyone knows about Katie's high-profile marriage to Tom Cruise (and their very public divorce), and Joshua has been praised for starring on TV shows ranging from Fringe to the recent series Dr. Death.

While many TV co-stars date, and some even get married and have families and stay together, it's special to hear that Joshua was the first person who Katie ever loved.

According to E! News, the actors dated in 1998 and 1999 and they were still close pals after they split.

While we've all had an awkward break-up, it sounds like the stars are still on good terms even today. Marie Claire UK reported that Katie Holmes phoned Joshua Jackson once she and Tom Cruise were divorced. Joshua said of the phone call, "‘Like any old friend, it was like, 'Oh, hi how are ya? What’s going on?' 'I had a kid'; 'Yeah, that’s crazy, I heard!' It was nice, it was very nice, actually."
