Fans were elated when Ciara and Russell Wilson started dating in 2015, even though they initially kept their relationship tightly under wraps. But by 2016, they were married, and now, the pair share two children together, plus Ciara's first child from another relationship.
Though Russell has a lot of star power himself, Ciara was arguably more famous in many circles when the two matched up. But what did Russell's mom, Tammy T. Wilson, think of her son's celebrity girlfriend when he first announced the relationship?
Tammy T. Wilson Had Thoughts About Ciara
When Russell first told his mom Tammy that he was dating Ciara, she wasn't really familiar with the singer. At that point, Ciara wasn't burning up the charts on the daily -- even though she's still plenty famous and BFFs with Vanessa Bryant.
In short, it was tough for Tammy T. Wilson to discern why her face was so familiar. But once she figured out who Ciara was, Tammy admitted that she had some specific advice for her son about his new girlfriend.
Russell's Mom Gave Some Smart Relationship Advice
Fortunately for Russell (and Ciara, too!), Tammy T. Wilson's advice had nothing to do with worrying over Ciara's fame or ensuring that her athlete son protecting himself against perceived threats to his wealth or public image.
Instead, Tammy cautioned her son against overlooking someone very important in his girlfriend's life: her young son.
After all, when Ciara and Russell began dating, Ciara's son was barely two years old. Unfortunately for the happy new couple, Ciara's relationship with her ex Future has always been a bit strained.
Fans assert that Future cheated on Ciara while she was pregnant with Future Jr., and the songstress has even sued Future for libel and slander in the past. Clearly, the pair were not effective co-parents, and it probably wasn't any fault of Ciara's.
So what did that mean for Russell Wilson, and what did his mom have to say about it? Tammy T. Wilson told her son in no uncertain terms that he'd better daddy up -- and quick.
Russell's Relationship With Future Jr. Was Crucial
In an interview, mama Wilson explained that she told her son from day one that he needed to prioritize building a relationship with Future Jr. First, she was a bit reserved, concerned that Ciara already had a child, and with someone kind of famous, too.
But Tammy explained that she and Russell "had conversations about that," but that she eventually told him that if he was "really serious" about Ciara, that he had to "love that kid as if it were your own."
By fans' estimations, and Ciara's too, Russell did that and more. Plus, even Ciara fully endorses her MIL, showcasing that they clearly have a good relationship, too. In a tweet, Ciara even called Tammy T. Wilson her "Mommy-In-Law."
