When a movie gets released, there are several ways to gauge how successful it is. For example, the first thing that typically matters to the movie studios is how much money the film in question makes at the box office. However, a movie can make a fortune at first only to be forgotten before too long. For that reason, it often is useful to look at how much people care about a movie in the years that follow.

When people put together lists of the movies that people have continued to care about for years, there are a handful of franchises that have continued to be relevant for decades. When it comes to those popular franchises, there are legions of people who care about them so much that they would do just about anything to get to cameo in one of them.

Unlike most people who sit at home dreaming of appearing on the big screen someday, Nick Frost has starred in a long list of movies and TV shows. As such, it makes sense that he views the movie industry very differently than the people who haven’t enjoyed any measure of fame. Even still, it is pretty shocking to learn that he passed up the opportunity to appear in a classic franchise because he wanted more money.

Cameo Culture

Throughout most of Hollywood history, movies and TV shows featuring celebrity cameos was a very uncommon thing. As a result, when someone recognizable surprisingly showed up in a film or show, it was pretty thrilling for audiences.

These days, celebrity cameos have become so common that they almost are expected, especially when you are watching a comedy. Unfortunately, that has taken away from how effective most cameos are when they do happen. Despite that, it still makes a certain level of sense that cameos have become so commonplace since it usually is exciting for everyone involved. At least, that seems to be the case for everyone who isn’t named Nick Frost.

Nick Says No

Since Nick Frost is a major movie star who comes across as someone who has a genuine love of all things pop culture, people often want to interview him. As a result of that, Frost fans have learned an awful lot about the actor, including the fact that he is very willing to speak his mind. Despite Frost’s outspoken past, it is still surprising that in 2021 he spoke openly about turning down the chance to appear in a Star Wars project.

During an appearance on the Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing I Did podcast, Nick Frost explained why he said no when he was asked to cameo in a Star Wars project. “It was only a little bit but I was like, it’s really small, the pay’s rubbish… I’ve got a family – I don’t do this for free. I mean I like Star Wars, I like watching it. I don’t want to watch it and think: ‘Look at your ugly mug’.”

After first explaining the reasons for his decision, Nick Frost went on to talk about whether or not he regrets turning down a Star Wars cameo role. “There’s a part of me that thinks, ‘you could have been in Star Wars‘… But f**k it. I tend to not to look backwards at all, so that doesn’t really affect me as a choice I took because I think, well, it’s done. I’ve made the decision.”

His Buddy’s Experience

Even though Nick Frost turned down the chance to appear in Star Wars, it is no secret that his pal Simon Pegg jumped at a similar opportunity. In all likelihood, the reason why Pegg agreed to his Star Wars role is that he is a well-documented fan of the franchise so the idea of playing a small part in it must have been thrilling. On top of that, it might have been awkward if Pegg said no since he appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a movie that was directed by J. J. Abrams. After all, Abrams and Pegg made 2009’s Star Trek reboot together.

Of course, Simon Pegg is far from the only famous person to land a Star Wars cameo. If you look back at the list of famous people who made a Star Wars cameo appearance, their faces typically are completely covered. In Simon Pegg’s case, that also is the case since he had to wear a rubber suit when he brought The Force Awakens’ Unkar Plutt to life. Unfortunately for Pegg, his experience on a Star Wars set had a major drawback.

“Unkar Plutt. He was a junk dealer on the planet Jakku and I was wearing that in 50-degree heat [122 degrees Fahrenheit] and I had these big rubber-like silicone gauntlets on my fingers and when I took them off I could pour the sweat out.”
