When people become attracted to someone else, it is usually due to things like the other person’s looks and personality. Unfortunately, however, even if a potential partner is good looking and is easy to get along with, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be a good mate. After all, if you kiss them and the chemistry isn’t there, it can quickly put an end to an otherwise promising relationship.

When it comes to onscreen couples, audiences tend to judge them on things like their perceived chemistry. However, sometimes actors who seem to have a wonderful connection onscreen can’t stand one another in real-life. Once you realize that, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that some of the steamy kisses that appear on the big screen weren’t that great in real-life.

Whenever Matthew McConaughey appears onscreen or in movies, he comes across as the type of person that gets along with everyone. While that seems to be quite accurate, that doesn’t mean that all of his co-stars have been delighted to kiss him on camera. In fact, one of his most notable co-stars has revealed that kissing him on camera has been pretty bad at times.

A Great Onscreen Couple

Throughout Hollywood history, there have been a handful of onscreen couples that audiences wanted to see come together over and over again. For example, moviegoers always seem to be happy to see Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, or Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling together. Similarly, Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson have been so delightful together onscreen that audiences would love to see them together again in the future.

Best known for co-starring in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days together, that romantic comedy wasn’t a critical darling but audiences have continued to enjoy it. With that in mind, nobody should be surprised that a lot of people were happy to see Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey come together to make 2008’s Fool’s Gold together.

Kate Reveals All

During most celebrity interviews, the stars are being asked unoriginal questions by strangers. On top of that, a lot of those interviews have to be completed on a very speedy timetable. With that in mind, it makes sense that a lot of interviews aren’t all that revealing. However, in recent years there have been several celebrities who’ve launched podcasts in which they interview their fellow stars and that has changed everything. After all, a star is a lot more likely to drop their guard while having a long-form conversation with one of the peers.

In September of 2008, Gwyneth Paltrow launched her wellness and lifestyle brand, Goop. Then, in 2018 the Goop podcast that is hosted by Paltrow was launched. In late-2020, Kate Hudson appeared on the Goop podcast and during her appearance, the two actors would go on to discuss their most memorable kissing scenes. Surprisingly enough, Hudson revealed that kissing Matthew McConaughey on camera has been rough. However, she also made it clear that was the case for reasons that were out of McConaughey’s control.

"The thing is, every time I kiss McConaughey, it's like, I mean, it's like there's just something happening and there's like snot or wind, or things are just... like when we were kissing in the end of Fool's Gold, we're like in the ocean, we like had the plane crash. He just had snot all over his face."

McConaughey’s Response

In real life, if somebody went around talking about their opinion that kissing you was a bad experience, that likely would be very distressing. Of course, when it comes to Matthew McConaughey, he always seems to take everything in stride so it isn’t surprising that he wasn’t bothered by what Kate Hudson said about kissing him. Instead, during an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, McConaughey completely agreed with Hudson’s take on their shared kissing scenes and the reasons why they weren’t a joy to film.

“It’s like, ‘OK, here's the scene: You’ve just jumped from the helicopter. You’re in the middle of the ocean. You go under the water, so on action, go into the water and then come up out of the water like you’re gasping for air,” McConaughey says, imitating a crew member. “You’re glad to be alive! Then you look at each other and you swim to each other and [go] into an embrace.”

Of course, it is nice that Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey went out of their way to make it clear that they weren’t blaming one another for their bad kissing scenes. That said, after learning about their rotten experiences kissing one another, it now makes a lot more sense that McConaughey and Hudson never dated despite their onscreen chemistry.
