I just let them either hate on it or talk about how great it was — mostly hate on the ending for like 10 minutes, and then I just sit there and listen and then say, “Goodbye, nice to meet you,” and then that’s it."

And then the idea was that ‘I'm not going to do this fourth season because it’s not worth it, because I’m in a better place now. This is not something that I want to continue to string out and have the recurring issues that stem from that first season. I don’t need or want to do this anymore.’”

When Bella Ramsey was first cast, she faced criticism from fans of the videogame for not looking like the character in the game.

Ramsey admits at first the online hate was amusing, as it was the first time she had met such a negative reaction, but it slowly got to her. “There would be times I’d find it funny. Then I’d get to the end of a 10-minute scrolling session, put my phone down and realize: maybe that was a bad idea,” she said.

“It’s only recently that I’ve accepted I am Ellie, and I can do it, and I am a good actor. But this will last for a few weeks and then I’ll think I’m terrible again. That’s just the process.”

“We were looking for a specific combination of contradictions: Someone that can be funny and quirky, and violent and rough,” creator Neil Druckmann said about the actor. When he saw Ramsey’s audition tape, he said, “I didn’t see Bella acting like Ellie — I saw Ellie.”
