A year ago, Dylan Mulvaney came out as a trans woman and began chronicling her journey on TikTok with her “Days of Girlhood” series. She has earned a host of celeb fans, including Kathy Hilton, Lady Gaga and Jonathan Van Ness.

“It was such an accident, but a very happy one,” Mulvaney told Variety. “Going in, I had no idea just how vulnerable I would get and how much I had to learn about womanhood.”

"When the pandemic hit, I was doing the Broadway musical Book of Mormon. I found myself jobless and without the creative means to do what I loved. I downloaded TikTok, assuming it was a kids' app. Once I came out as a woman, I made this 'day one of being a girl' comedic video. And it blew up," she explained.

She gained popularity for sharing the highs and lows of transitioning. She now has over 11 million TikTok followers and has deals with companies like CeraVe, MAC, Neutrogena, and Kate Spade.

“I put so much of my own identity away just so that I could have opportunities in my industry,” she told Los Angeles Magazine in 2022. “I struggled for so long in having the entertainment industry accept me and have a place for me… now, because the internet and all these followers have decided to love me, it’s creating these opportunities that I didn’t have before.”

Dylan Mulvaney is sadly accustomed to getting online hate for her honest videos about transitioning. Mulvaney said she does not understand why social media users who don’t know her personally choose to criticize her for doing something that makes her happy and has no effect on their lives.

Instead of ignoring the critical messages, Mulvaney said she directly calls out her “haters.”

She has also spoken about conservative commentators dedicating whole hour-long videos and podcasts to her. "With something like that I just have to realize that when you are this public, that you're open to critique [and] you’re open to others expressing their opinions. And I think that's a beautiful thing, but we all just have to remember that these are real people behind the screen and that these feelings matter.

“With someone like this conservative podcaster, I just have to think, why does she care this much about another person's identity when it's really such a personal decision. It's about my happiness. So, that's just one person. There's a lot of good ones out there too.”

After her interview with President Biden, senator Marsha Blackburn tweeted a video of Dylan Mulvaney discussing normalizing “women having bulges,” calling her a “radical left-wing lunatic.”

Caitlyn Jenner retweeted her comments and add. “Thank you for speaking out and having a backbone – one of the best senators we have. Let’s not ‘normalize’ any of what this person is doing. This is absurdity!” Caitlyn then misgendered Dylan in a follow-up tweet, saying she was “talking about his p**is.”

Dylan responded to the comment in a TikTok. Calling Marsha and Caitlyn two of the most “privileged trans women in America,” Dylan also said she would still be open to finding common ground with Jenner, despite their different political viewpoints. “I automatically have a lot of respect for you as a fellow trans woman, but then you decided to ridicule me very publicly,” said Dylan.

“I’m just curious if you can think back to your early days of transitioning and remember being embarrassed about your body or having strangers give you dirty looks, that’s why I made that video,” Mulvaney also revealed. “Because I was embarrassed, and I wanted to reclaim my body in a positive way. Now you’ve taken that and turned it into something really ugly.”
