After Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David became pals on the standup comedy circuit, the two men went on to create the hit show Seinfeld together. Even though Seinfeld was promoted as being loosely based on Jerry’s life, the truth of the matter is events in Larry’s life had a huge impact on the show. For example, everyone knows that the character George Costanza was based on Larry. Once Seinfeld ended and Larry went on to create Curb Your Enthusiasm, his life continued to inform his work. For that reason, a lot of Larry’s fans want to know why Larry and his ex-wife got divorced.

Larry David Has Been Very Open About Why He And Laurie Got Divorced

After marrying in 1993, Larry and Laurie David stayed together for many years before their 2007 divorce. During their time together, Laurie had a huge impact on Larry’s life with him even basing his onscreen Curb Your Enthusiasm wife played by Cheryl Hines on her. With that in mind, it took many people by surprise when Larry and Laurie went their separate ways.

Following his divorce, Larry David agreed to be profiled by Rolling Stone in 2011. After all, Larry admitted that he is perfectly fine with women who were interested in him due to his fame and fortune.

“Why else would somebody approach me? Who’s going up to a bald guy, an old bald guy? Nobody! If I wasn’t on television, who’s coming up to me? People would run from me, are you kidding? If I tried to flirt with a woman and she didn’t know who I was, she would run away.” He pauses. “And who’s not shallow, by the way?”

On another occasion in 2011, Larry David addressed his divorce during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Given how open Larry was while talking to Rolling Stone about his dating prospects, it makes sense that he was honest when he was asked why he got divorced. However, even for him, Larry was surprisingly frank about why his marriage failed.

"Well, she thought that it would be nice to have s*x with someone she liked. She wanted to try that. And I said it's not a good idea. Because you never wanna have sex with people you like. You can't have good sex with people you like. Doing those things. And then you're supposed to talk to them?"

Larry David Has Seemingly Found Happiness With His Second Wife, Ashley Underwood

During the aforementioned 2011 Rolling Stone interview in which he talked about dating post-divorce, Larry David also discussed the prospects of getting married again. To say that at that time Larry was against walking down the aisle again is an understatement. “It would be a silly thing to do. Why would I do it? Why would I want that contract? I already have kids. The best situation is being a single parent. The best part about is that you get time off, too, because the kids are with their mom, so it’s the best of both worlds. There’s a lot to be said for it. You get married, you have kids – you should plan this from the beginning. We’re going to have these kids, then we’ll get divorced when they’re four. All right, six.”

Given that it hadn’t been too long after Larry David got divorced that he gave that interview, it isn’t surprising that he was pretty jaded about the topic of marriage. Clearly, they say time heals all wounds for a reason as since then, Larry not only changed his mind, he walked down the aisle again.
