Maya Hawke may fall into the group of celebrity children following in their parent's footsteps, but she's already off to an impressive start in her acting career.

The daughter of actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman may be jealous of her parent's careers, but she seems to be doing okay on her own. She's already appeared in films like Little Women, shows as popular as Stranger Things, and is set to appear in another film alongside Camila Mendes.

But who exactly is this new emerging star? Let's take a look at who Maya really is.

She Went To An Artsy School

Maya's parents met like most couples in Hollywood, on the set of a movie. Thurman and Hawke met on the set of Gattaca in 1997 and quickly fell in love. They married in 1998, the same year Maya was born, but eventually divorced in 2005. She has a brother, Levon, who was born in 2002.

Like most celebrity children, Maya was practically raised on the sets of some of the most famous films. The family once picked up everything and moved to China for six months while Thurman was filming Kill Bill. She was just four and would "watch my mom get the shit kicked out of her while I ate gummy bears."

She also sat backstage during her father's performances of Anton Chekhov’s play The Cherry Orchard, in 2009.

After she was diagnosed with dyslexia she frequently changed schools until she was enrolled at Saint Ann's School, a private school in Brooklyn, New York, which does not grade work, and instead encourages artistic ability.

In this creative environment, Maya turned to her parent's profession and soon began her career in showbiz. She started taking summer classes at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York.

She started out in modeling, and like her mother and grandmother, she posed for Vogue. In 2016/2017, she modeled for the British company AllSaints and later on appeared in the video campaign for Calvin Klein's underwear, which was directed by Sophia Coppola.

In 2017, she started attending Juilliard but decided to drop out at the end of her second semester to join the cast of PBS's Little Women. She played Jo March in the film and co-starred with Emily Watson and Angela Lansbury.

"In a lot of ways, I have been preparing for this character my entire life," Maya told Elle. Little Woman was one of the first books she read as a child.

"Jo was a big inspiration to me, as far as having the drive and the passion to pursue my love for reading and writing, even when it was challenging."

But leaving her studies was scary for Maya at first. "One thing about leaving your training early is that it leaves you with all the tools with which to criticize yourself, without the skills to be able to implement the things that you know you’re supposed to be doing."

Despite this Maya said that acting comes naturally to her. Maybe it's in her blood?

When She Came Back She Went On A Road Trip

After she came home from filming in Ireland, Maya got a lot done. She moved into her first apartment, decided to go on a road trip from New Mexico to Los Angeles, and filmed her first movie, a little indie film called Ladyworld.

Maya doesn't seem to want to slow down, which is good. She recognizes that it is a hard industry to get into and is thankful that she was born into it. "It’s a very hard industry to get into, and if you grow up in it, it’s a lot easier."

But there isn't that much to say about her relationship with her parents, other than that she thinks that they had it so easy growing up in their generation. She does confide in them though. Thurman has taught her daughter to "make the choices you want to make."

"The moment you decide to go to an acting school you close a thousand doors," Maya went on to explain. "The moment you decide to leave one, you close a hundred doors. The moment you choose to do Little Women, you open 10 doors and you close 5. It’s like this endless journey of making decisions about who you’re going to be in your minimal time on this earth. That’s scary."

In 2019, Maya had a small role in Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood. The film was of course directed by Quentin Tarantino, the same director who directed her mother in the Kill Bill films.

In her spare time, she works on a book of poems and a screenplay. She earns a little cash here and there for paid appearances at industry parties.

Recently, Maya has starred in the third season of Strange Things, as Robin Buckley, even though she never watched the show prior to landing the role.

She is also slated to star in the film, Strangers, along with Camila Mendes, but with all of her potential, we have a feeling we are going to be seeing a lot more of her. We'll just have to wait and see.
