Jason Alexander is best known for his time on the hit sitcom, Seinfeld. His character George Costanza, may have been based on the comedian Larry David, but he made it his own. However, Alexander didn't just make George Costanza so famous and practically a household name with just his expert comedic skills. When people think about the TV character, they picture Alexander and his distinct features, especially his balding head. There's really no need for Alexander to feel concious about it because fans clearly love him either way. But it is one of his most recognizable features.
He shouldn't cover up his bald spot because he shouldn't be ashamed. However, he's tried hair pieces and they've worked for him. So, why did Alexander stop using them?
Jason Alexander Started Using A Hair Piece In 2011
Alexander opened up about his hair loss according to Allusion's blog in 2011. He'd recently started using a synthetic hairpiece that was created specifically for him to look like himself, but 10 years younger. After consistently losing his hair since the age of 17, he wanted to cover his bald spot with as much hair as he had ten years prior. He didn't expect a hairpiece that gave him back a full head of hair because that would look obvious. So he got a piece that looked more realistic.
"What you see on my head is a really good, semi-permanent hairpiece," he said. "By semi-permanent I mean that I can wear it constantly for weeks at a time, if I so choose. I can swim, shower, work out — whatever. It stays on. Or I can take it off any time of any day I choose.
"The reason it looks thin is that I challenged my designer to make me a piece that would look very similar to the way I did 10 years ago. So, it looks like a guy who is losing his hair and isn’t an artificial mop of hair that I never had. The designer was dubious at first but he actually loves the look now. And the fact is that we are still playing around with the shape and density to make it as flattering and natural-looking as we can."
Allusion writes, "Alexander approves of the latest advancements in men’s hair loss solutions." He says, "In general, for those men and women who have hair loss issues, I can tell you that these systems have become very easy to wear, very easy to handle and the adhesives that have developed give you great flexibility in regard to how often and how long you wear your system."
Fans Were Confused By Jason Alexander's Hair Piece
After Alexander started wearing the hairpiece, fans of course noticed right away. How could we all not? Alexander is known for his famous bald spot and when that bald spot didn't look as bald all of a sudden fans were curious. They immediately thought he'd gotten a hair transplant considering how realistic it looked, but it was a hairpiece as Alexander explained.
Still, people couldn't believe it, so Alexander went on his Twitter to explain his hair situation. "So yes, I'm still bald and yes, just like others in my profession who have to either wear make-up or dye their hair or undergo surgery, I now do a little something. It's honestly no big deal for me and hope it's not for you either."
Alexander explained why, after all this time, he started wearing the piece. "The way my hair has receded in the last two years was best defined as 'dorky'... recently, the look lost any kind of impression other than purely comical," he said. "Also, there was a practical element — onstage and even to a degree on film, my head had become a big beacon, reflecting light in a very obvious and distracting way.
"My wife and I discussed it and came up with 3 options - do nothing and accept it; shave my head (but I thought that might limit my castability even more) or put some hair back," he explained. "I thought about grafts or implants but frankly didn't trust the results would be good enough and also wanted to retain the option of playing truly bald characters. So I began looking for a hair system."
But why has Alexander seemed to forgo the hairpiece? There's been no trace of it since Alexander first started wearing it around. His most recent Instagram pictures and videos don't show to semi-balding head. He has even posted a throwback photo of himself from 1977, with hair. He commented, "Had to dig this out for Seth Rudetsky. 1977. All downhill from there." We hope he just means his hair loss.
When he started wearing the piece he even said he hoped fans wouldn't think any certain way about him. He hoped fans liked it because it made him comfortable, but now since he's not wearing it anymore, maybe it wasn't right for him. Either way, for whatever reason Alexander decided to stop wearing his very realistic hairpiece, we love him anyway.
