Mike Myers has had both a lucrative and tumultuous career in Hollywood. The Canadian comedian won the world’s heart as one of the most popular Saturday Night Live performers of the nineties and he became a box office favorite when he brought his most beloved SNL characters to the big screen. Wayne's World and Wayne's World 2, which co-starred fellow SNL alum Dana Carvey and featured the talents of people like Rob Lowe and Christopher Walken, were hit films that yielded over $200 million at the box office.

But it was his Austin Powers movies that made Mike Myers a household name. Austin Powers International Man of Mystery, The Spy Who Shagged Me, and Goldmember were all parodies of popular James Bond films and would rake in over $500 million as a franchise through ticket sales alone. While the films were at their most popular, the Austin Powers character became the mascot for numerous consumer products and would be featured in several commercials for things like cars and Pepsi products. Myers even found himself doing Pepsi commercials with Britney Spears.

Myers, still riding high, then became the voice of one of America’s most popular cartoon characters. The first Shrek film premiered in 2001 and it is considered to be one of the most successful film franchises in Hollywood history.

But as time went on, Myers continually found himself in front of the camera much less. Myers eventually would become responsible for one of the most critically hated films of all time and both his career and reputation would suffer a major setback because of it. However, all was not lost and Myers still found a way to entertain and warm the hearts of his audience, and he continues to do so today. Now, after what was an almost ten-year hiatus from on-screen acting, Myers seems geared up for a comeback.

7 'The Love Guru' Bombed

As mentioned above, Myers suffered a huge career setback when his 2008 film The Love Guru became one of the most notorious flops in film history. Myers, who was never one to shy away from gross-out humor, relied on it so heavily that critics and fans alike were repulsed. The show's stereotypical portrayal of Indian culture, unsettling use of CGI, and overdependence on celebrity cameos also damaged the movie’s appeal. It did not help that the Austin Powers fad had long become outdated, yet Myers seemed to think his previous franchise's brand of humor was still in demand. The film has an abismal 14% on the film review website, Rotten Tomatoes.

6 He Continued To Do 'Shrek' Work

Despite The Love Guru failing, Shrek was still a thriving film franchise with video games, theme park rides, sequels, and spin-offs being produced. Myers was definitely short on on-camera work after The Love Guru, but he was not short on work itself. Nor was he short on income thanks to all those Shrek residuals.

5 He Was In A Tarantino Film

His only on-camera role immediately after The Love Guru was a brief cameo as a general in Quinten Tarantino’s WWII film Inglourious Basterds. He was in heavy make-up to the point that several people in the audience did not realize which character he had played until they rewatched the movie again a second time.

4 He Took A 9 Year Break From Acting

After his appearance in Inglorious Bastards in 2009, Myers would not be seen in an on-screen role for almost a decade. He would not return to acting until he landed a few supporting dramatic roles in 2018.

3 He Began Directing And Made A Documentary

Myers was still receiving recognition despite his slowed-down career. He was honored in his homeland of Canada with civilian honors and his face now graces a postage stamp there. But while taking a break from acting, Myers directed and produced Supermensch, The Legend of Shep Gordon. The film was a documentary about the legendary agent and manager who represented the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kenny Loggins, Blondie, Teddy Pendergrass, George Clinton, The Gypsy Kings, even Groucho Marx, and dozens of other celebrities and legendary bands. The film opened in 2013 to high audience praise but mixed critical reviews.

2 He Returned To The Talk Show Circuit

Now with acclaimed, serious films under his belt, Myers had a reason to resurface. He appeared on The Tonight Show and other late-night programs, some hosted by fellow SNL alums like Late Night with Seth Meyers or The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, to promote his documentary and later to promote more serious projects. His reputation restored and The Love Guru years behind him, Myers was ready to act again.

1 He Has Returned To The Screen In Supporting Roles

Although he has not returned to starring roles yet, Myers has started to perform again and had supporting parts in Terminals and Bohemian Rhapsody, the latter of which won both critical approval and several awards. He is currently in the post-production phase of a new miniseries titled The Pentravert and he is attached as executive producer. The days of the comedian's gross-out popularity might have come to an end, but he seems ready to redeem himself with some impressive new additions to his resume.
