Mila Kunis shared an eight-year relationship with Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, which many fans seem to forget about - presumably because their romance was very much kept under the radar throughout their time together.
The two were very much in love with one another, and there were even rumors floating around at the time that Culkin was looking to tie the knot with his ex-girlfriend, but things came crashing down in 2011 when the couple suddenly decided to call it quits.
Their split came out of nowhere, and while Kunis and Culkin remained tightlipped on their split, it wasn’t until 2018 when the Friends with Benefits star decided to open up on what led to her breakup with Culkin before she would go on to settle down with Ashton Kutcher.
Why Did Mila Kunis Leave Macaulay Culkin?
In an interview with Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast in 2018, Kunis, who has always remained silent on matters concerning her past relationships, came clean and admitted that their breakup was mostly her fault.
“I f**ked up,” she said. “I was an a** in my 20s and I’ll be the first to admit it. And that’s something that took me a long time to come out and be like, “Yeah, you know what, I was a d**k,” and accept it and I own it now.”
While the mother-of-two takes accountability for her past mistakes, she wouldn’t go into detail on the specific things she did that ended up seeing her relationship with Culkin fall apart, but going off by what she said, it was bad enough that a reconciliation was out of the question.
She then went on to say: “And it’s f**ked up what I did and it’s f**ked up how I did it. When I got to be single I said, ‘I just need to figure myself out.’ I genuinely need to know why I did what I did, and, like regroup myself as a human being.”
When asked whether she was able to forgive herself for the mistakes she made that caused her split with Culkin, the Black Swan actress said she felt enough time had passed for her to move on from the situation - but it doesn’t change the fact that their relationship ended on really bad terms.
Fans were quick to assume that Kunis may have cheated on Culkin with Ashton Kutcher, who she started dating in 2012 - but could there have been some overlapping going on while the brunette was still in a relationship with Culkin perhaps?
She’s never confirmed or denied the cheating reports, so we can’t say for sure, but it seems interesting that Kunis can’t elaborate on what she did that consequently led to the demise of an eight-year relationship. Nonetheless, even though she’s forgiven herself, she still feels bad about it the situation, so it must have been serious.
When Did Mila Kunis Start Dating Macaulay Culkin?
Mila and Macaulay started dating sometime in 2002, but their romance started pretty rocky considering that the latter lived in New York City while Kunis was busy working in Los Angeles.
She went on to describe Culkin as her “steady rock” who she grew up with, adding that their first encounter came about at a very young age. When they reconnected in their adult year, Kunis wasn’t going to miss the opportunity of seeing what a romantic relationship would entail with the guy she was smitten by in her teenage years.
In 2016, during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, the 37-year-old hinted that Culkin’s fame could have also been the reason why things ended up falling apart for the two, recalling how a simple walk down the street would lead to an army of screaming fans rushing for a photo with the former child star.
“He was huge. You couldn’t walk down the street with him,” she said.
“He always had this weird attraction, like fans just screamed when they saw him! They didn’t know how to react. It wasn’t like a normal response to a celebrity. Fans responded in a very abnormal way to him.”
And while Kunis has since settled down with Kutcher, whom she married in 2015; the couple shares two kids, Culkin has also found love again, having dated former Disney star Brenda Song since 2017.
What’s interesting about their romance is that during an interview with Anna Faris on her Unqualified podcast, Culkin said that being with Song has made him realize what it’s like to be “treated well in that kind of way,” which many perceived as a subtle diss at Kunis, who has since revealed that she didn’t treat her ex in the best way.
“I’m with a lady right now and she is like, so good to me that they feel like blows,” Culkin told Farris. “Like, she just does nice things and I feel like I’m almost like, at first I didn’t know how to be treated well in that kind of way.”
“It was a strange, almost foreign kind of concept. That kind of thing, that was important to me and now I realized, ‘Oh, it is important to me as well.’"
