While Grimes, Elon Musk's partner and the mother of his youngest child, is often posting up and promoting her music on Instagram, Elon's nonexistent on the platform. Fans often wonder why Elon doesn't have IG.

After all, it's not like he's not online at all. He posts on Twitter frequently (and has 40.8 million followers), so he clearly appreciates the virtual connection he has to followers and fellow scientific minds.

But that might be part of the reason he condemns Instagram, even though Grimes is fairly active on there. While Elon often posts about Space X missions and happenings, Grimes promotes her music and her merch. Remember, she was a self-made musician before meeting Musk.

Though he mostly focuses on science (and scientific debate) on Twitter, promoting stuff isn't the problem with Instagram, according to Musk.

As Business Insider recapped, Musk's opinion of IG has to do with folks' behavior over there. While Twitter lends itself to sharing thoughts, Insta is more about images (understandably). And the issue is that "people look like they have a much better life than they really do," said Musk in an interview.

To be fair, that's true of any social media platform; what Elon says of IG is true of Facebook and even Twitter as well. "People are posting pictures of when they were really happy, they’re modifying those pictures to be better-looking... they’re selecting the pictures for the best lighting, the best angle," says Elon.

It's the same complaint that many people have historically had about magazines. Too-perfect people and their too-perfect looks, lives, and families get readers down. So is the case with social media posts that are unrealistic yet really enticing, claims the Space X founder.

And at the same time, says Elon, "Some of the happiest seeming people – actually some of the saddest people in reality. And nobody looks good all the time, it doesn’t matter who you are."

While Elon's partner might not share his feelings about skipping signing up for Instagram, she doesn't seem like one of the people whose posts are ultra-fake or elicit self-deprecation from followers.

Though, to be fair, her and Musk's views on other issues seem a bit contrary. For example, Grimes posted about her new recycled clothing venture and promoted merch for it, extolling the virtues of reusing clothing to help save the environment.

Then, she posted a selfie with a Space X rocket, and her followers were a bit miffed.

But when your partner is the head of a space exploration organization, there's probably not much to do other than take selfies with rockets, right? After all, the couple isn't very lovey-dovey on social media, although Grimes has shared some of her thoughts about Elon's parenting. But the rest, fans can only speculate about.
